Friends of the Cross get a huge check from broke state

Unfortunately it works both ways because if you are on tax exempt status you are in the same boat. Government is like water, it seeps into everything. Fortunately the government can’t tax God’s love.
 
This is nothing out of the ordinary. At least here there are several grants that non-profits and the like can apply for to help with repairs and whatnot, which seems the case in California. But they have to be for very specific things.

I’m a bit slow witted at 12:12 am. Not sure how one is in the same boat if they are tax exempt?

Bear with me, just not following you in this particular case.

Well, in a way maybe this is good. Once government gives religion money, then it can start telling it how to run it’s affairs.

Huge mistake.Churches should never accept money from government EVER for exactly the reason you state.We already have tax free status and that is enough.If parishoners won’t support their churches or “projects” they should close or shouldn’t happen.It’s the thin edge of the wedge.We’ve already had some of the “elite” in my country saying governments should basically oversee all Church activities,including forcing Catholic Churches to “ordain” women.Every devout Catholic in this country would be volunteering for The Cross before they rendered THAT unto Caesar.

Thank you for bringing up that point I did not even think of. Forcing women to be ordained, yes- that could be the fate of this particular protestant church for taking this welfare handout.

I’m not sure it would even matter to them though, they may already allow that. Or will be willing to change as long as the change keeps going into their bank account.😉

At least the Catholic Church is not selling out.
 
It’s totally unfair to Atheists,Agnostics,Non-Christians and members of ALL other Faiths.It is an unconscionable abuse of the taxpayers money.How do they get away with it?

However, the grant is not going to a church or even to repair a church. It is to be spent on repairing what might be better described as a sculpture.

Rob Sherman recently met with the board of Friends of the Cross. He asked that they return the $20,000 to the State of Illinois, and suggested they also return $5000 to the County of Union. Both grants were ostensibly made to promote tourism in a part of the state which is chronically impoverished. Sherman threatened a lawsuit on constitutional grounds if the board did not comply with his request to return the money to the state.

The expected cost to repair the cross is $375,000 and the Friends of the Cross have raised about half that money. Reconstruction is expected to be finished this summer.

Perhaps you are unaware, but in the US it is entirely possible to have a building or structure on land which is not owned by the same person or organization. Such land is leased, perhaps for 99 years, and the owner of the structure or building is separate from the owner of the land. Many homes in US National Forests fall into this category.
