What is the philosophy of friendship and why is it important?

I think Aristotle said something about friendship didn’t he? I believe that he listed out 3 types of friendship 1) Utility–to use one 2) pleasure–to get only pleasure out of one 3)final good–to get the final good out of one

Do I have the three correct?

If so or if not, what then is the** final good of friendship?**

You could try Aelred of Rievaulx “On Spiritual Friendship”.

There is a better kind of friendship: selfless giving.

My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command.

–Jesus (John 15:12-14)

The Greek word for this kind of love is pronounced something like agapey.

I am not looking for spiritual friendship or theological friendship just mostly philosophical.

What did Aristotle say about Friendship? What did Aquinas say about friendship?

Friendships are good for humans.

St. Thomas defines something as “good” if it fufills its nature.

For example, the nature of an axe is to cut. If the axe cuts well, then it is a “good” axe.

God is a Trinity. A communion of persons. An interaction of complete self-giving and love.

We are created in the image and likeness of God.

Thus it is part of our nature and purpose to be a communion of people with interaction and self-giving and love because these things help to fufill our nature and purpose and develop the “Image of God” within us more, so that we may become more like Him.

In Christ,

JD
