From 2002: The sad state of the English translation of the Roman Missal

While roaming through the EWTN Q and A section, I came across some comments written by their resident liturgist Colin Donavon. These are certainly appropriate to our discussion:

Of course, at the rate the ICEL is going, it’ll probably be 2012. And, if the Mayan prophecies hold up, we may not even be here when this happens.

Our bishop, who’s on the translation committee, seems confident that we will get the Missal next year. We may know more after the ICEL conference next week.

Perhaps he meant “minor” as in what will affect the person in the pew, but I can think of a number of changes for the 2002 missal that I like. Especially the newer Vigil and Votive Masses, not to mention the newer feasts that we’ve being doing without like the Holy Name of Jesus.

This evening’s edition of Zenit gave some progress on the Roman Missal. Evidently, from what I’ve read, Cardinal Arinze seems to think that the light is at the end of the tunnel. Hopefully, this will be the case.

Regarding the Optional Memorial of the Holy Name of Jesus, I believe that it had been taken off the Calendar, but, John Paul II brought it back (much like he did another Marian Feast).
