I dont’ know how to say this but here goes- everytime i go to a catholic church or debate with my friends about catholic teachings i get this weird feeling. I feel attracted to the catholic church but don’t know why. Currently I am a protestant at a non-denom university and was raised in a reformed background. i disagree with a much of catholic teaching like purgatory and mary and the saints. Even though i disagree i feel this attraction. Does anyone have any online resources that could help me to really study the differences between the catholic church and protestants. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Well, you’ve definetly come to the right place…Catholic Answers is a great place to get started. Just go to the ‘library’ and start reading, tons of info there.

Yeah: Purgatory, Mary, the Saints, Confession, Apostolic Succession – all that stuff just about chokes a Protestant to death at first.

I think it was Scott Hahn – BTW, he wrote a great book with his wife called, Rome Sweet Home. You would get the quick view of some of these issues in there. Worth the $$$ – anyway, Scott Hahn said, shortly before he came into the Church, I only have three problems left with the Catholic Church:

The good news is: there’s more information available now than ever. On the left hand margin of the home page are topics that are often asked. Read through those carefully and see exactly what they say.

Check www.chnetwork.org they have conversion stories written by men and women, clergy and lay people that have found their way into the Catholic Church. I find these stories not only inspiring but they often give great insight on history, theology etc.

There’s a reason you’re attracted. It is home.

Take your time, pray and read a lot. You will not run out of resource here. If you need books, we can recommend. Ask us as many questions as you wish and we’ll try to answer them.

Why only online? Why not do some serious reading? It’s a serious issue, you know. You are a student, after all. If I were your professor I’d be very concerned at your assumption that you can understand anything well using only online sources.

And give the best of Protestantism (not just generic evangelicalism) a chance. Coming from a Reformed background that would be easier for you than for most folks.

If I may be so bold as to do so, I’d like to recommend my blog. I haven’t posted on it for a while because I’ve been finishing my dissertation (on the Reformation), but I have written about Protestant-Catholic issues quite a bit.

After the dissertation is finished, I’m seriously thinking of writing a book explaining Catholicism for evangelicals–not with the purpose of converting anyone to anything or even defending or attacking anything, but just to provide some clear, concise, relatively unbiased information.

My campus minister said that if you want to look at what is sacred in the world, just look at what Satan goes out of his way to attack. Respect for life (in so many different ways) is definitely #1 in general. Still, as far as spirituality is concerned, I notice Mary sure does get more than her fair share of the slander!

Its been mentioned above in this thread but I’d second getting in touch with The Coming Home Network. They will, if you want, match you with a “helper” of similar background to you to answer your questions and, if it turns out that way, help you “cross the Tiber”.

I must echo, “Rome Sweet Home” is definitely worth the money! Their (him & his wife, Kimberly) story of conversion is in beautiful detail. I also have “Hail, Holy Queen”. I adore Scott Hahn, his writing flows so well and his books are so educational (even for the seasoned Catholic.)

My advice to you Lloydy? Pray, educate yourself with the links provided here, pray, never hesitate to ask questions and pray some more. God will always lead you in the right direction. 🙂
 
RCIA is the best place to start, you are under no obligation to join the Catholic Church, but you will find all the guidance and assist you need to learn the truth. Welcome!!! :yup:

As a “revert” to the Church…I never went to another church, just fell away for a few years…I felt the same pressures and attraction to return to the Church…and it got to be an overwhelming feeling.

I’m not so much sure that you “disagree” with the Church’s teachings regarding the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Saints, and Purgatory… I suspect it may just be that you don’t know all the facts and with some reading and guidance you will come to understand that all of these subjects are properly scriptural, though some may disagree… 😃 Its that “oral tradition” thing. 😃

Some of the other posters have given some great advice and links to some great sites. I have used many of them myself to re-educate myself regarding my faith and my Church. You might also want to purchase a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church…it spells it all out, and you will find that in the Catholic Church there is a uniformity in the Word of God that does not exist elsewhere…

Let the Holy Spirit guide you, and you will find the truth. 👍
