From Adam?

Could I reconcile it this way…male and female evolved together, simultaneously, but God gave Adam his soul first, then Eve?

I just recently read something on CAF that said we must believe Eve was formed from Adam, but I believe that we came from previous life forms, and eventually were given souls, which is compatible with Humani Generis. Is it a fact that we must believe woman was formed from Adam and if so, any helpful explanations or theories on how it came about?

I just thought that maybe way down the line, at the very beginning of life, females came from males in some way and that eventually led to one thing then another, which eventually led to humans as we know them to be.

Yes, it is a fact that Adam was the first human being and that Eve came from Adam. The Bible is very clear on this point as it is recounted in Genesis and in St Paul. The CCC#359 states:

St. Paul tells us that the human race takes its origin from two men: Adam and Christ. . . the first man, Adam, he says, became a living soul, the last Adam a life-giving spirit. the first Adam was made by the last Adam, from whom he also received his soul, to give him life… the second Adam stamped his image on the first Adam when he created him. That is why he took on himself the role and the name of the first Adam, in order that he might not lose what he had made in his own image. the first Adam, the last Adam: the first had a beginning, the last knows no end. the last Adam is indeed the first; as he himself says: “I am the first and the last.”

As another poster already stated, the CCC#371 follows the Bible and the entire Tradition of the Church in describing that “The woman [Eve] God “fashions” from the man’s rib…”

Now you don’t have to think that because Adam was the first human being and that Eve was fashioned from the rib of Adam that Eve or females are not equal to men for they are equal as persons being made in the image of God as St Paul says: “For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free person, there is not male and female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3: 27-28).

Any science to back that up? So far, all I’ve read is either females came first or males and females evolved together. Seems it would be fairly easy to find something scientific to support what you said, if it’s correct.

The word of God doesn’t need science to back it up; it is superior to any science. Science and the word of God need not be in contradiction to each other as God is the author of both. If there is a science that contradicts revealed truth, then there is something wrong with that science and it cannot be called science at all but is a fabrication of someone’s imagination. The word of God is certain truth whereas scientific theories, such as evolution, though it may be true to some extent, is just that, i.e., a theory. albeit, a theory with many gaps.
 
The first life forms, single-cell organisms, divided to form other single-cell organisms.😛

I am curious your thoughts on this and what it means in regard to how the earth moves and the effect of the earths failure to spin?

So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies, as it is written in the Book of Jashar. The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. Joshua 10:13

Do you hold that as literal as you do Genesis 1-3?

Absolutely. God created the entire universe out of nothing and it is He who gives movement to anything that moves as St Paul says “For ‘In him we live and move and have our being.” (Acts 17:28). It is certainly within God’s power to stop the sun in the middle of the sky just as it is within His power and by His power that the sun moves at all.

Sure. It’s also in his power to suspend us in a snow globe by a string and shine a flashlight on us.

But he didn’t.

He set laws of motion and created science. He created a beautiful infinitely complex wonderland that we can explore and discover.

You throw such majesty in the toilet in trade for carnival tricks.

What a shame. The fundamentalist sola Scriptura zealots I grew up around did the same.

No, I believe God created out of nothing, however we still need to give science its due for what we do know. At the same time we need to be honest about what we don’t know.

We do know that either males and females were created or evolved together, or the female came first, then the male. So…? Now what?

I don’t think you should be so hung up on this point. Things like this are really speculative by science standards even.

It certainly not fact, just held theory with loose evidence.

In a nutshell, science, to my knowledge has no way to determine this, and it seems to go against evolutionary theory to suggest one came first. Evolutionary theory has small changes over time leading to new species so the males and females would generally be similarly developed.

So from a Christian perspective we then turn to the soul issue, which really had no affect on the biology.

I’m sorry Faith I’m missing your point? Your still thinking about the rib? 🙂 I also think if I remember right, the actual translation isn’t Adams rib, but his side, this too then places a different emphasis on not only of the same species but of equality. Which it seems clear since the fall bought other connotations connected with Eve.
