I will protest any kind of Orthodox bashing here. Please point to any such thread, hit the alert button!

I am assuming you mean Eastern Orthodox not in communion with Rome? Because all Orthodox means is “right belief” I think.

There are Eastern Rites in the Catholic Church in communion with the Bishop of Rome.

Maybe I don’t know what perspective you are looking for, that is why I asked. I have a zillion researches on that whole topic.

An “Orthodox perspective” that you yourself can voice because you are Orthodox? I don’t know what to think about a topic that is simultaneously accusatory and devoid of any evidence to back up such a charge.

There’s no way anyone can win here, I’m afraid. Some Catholic members have also insisted that we are too “soft” towards the Orthodox for a group of (mostly) Catholic people. I personally don’t care either way, but I do find it funny in light of the “Orthodox bashing” that you claim goes on.

Interesting article, anyway. I definitely agree with the author’s negative view towards “progressive understanding” of theology, whether or not this is actually an accurate assessment of official Catholic teaching or not (I’ve never been able to get a straight yes/no answer out of any priest I’ve asked about this; perhaps I am not phrasing my question clearly). Whatever happened to “lex orandi, lex credendi”? I guess that’s not so dependable if what you believe is expected to change in some sort of progression from one age to the next. I understand that Christ is the same today as He was in the past. I don’t understand what needs to be “updated”, then. Oh well. I’m a bad Catholic. Moving on…

Bring evidence of “Orthodox bashing”, please.

Quick tip:
— “orthodox” (lower case “o”) means “right belief”
— “Orthodox” (capitalized “o”) is referring to the Eastern Christian Churches, such as the church of Russia, Greece, Romania, the such.

Namaste.👍

I see Orthodox Church-bashing here.

Here is a view of the situation from the other side:

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ORTHODOXY AND ROMAN CATHOLICISM?
**By Father Michael Azkoul **

www.ocf.org/OrthodoxPage/reading/ortho_cath.html -

Depends whom you ask - John Romanides, or Hilarion Alfeyev, the Punch & Judy of the Greek Church. The Orthodox - so-called - are as FOS as Rome. Were the excommunications lifted in 1964 ? Again, depends whom you ask.

Fun link. Probably my favourite article is the one which paraphrases and quotes a bunch of Azkoul’s writings to assert that St. Augustine is the author of all the Protestant and Catholic heresies. Azkoul, an Old Calendarist associated with HOCNA, is at the far end of this type of stuff but it’s fun to read:

ugh “original guilt”. Has that ever been actual Catholic teaching, that we inherit guilt from Adam?

I have been stuggling with this thing you mention quite frankly. The catholic church and the eastern orhtodox that do not accept the Bishop of Rome as Father amoung equals has been a topic I was very interested in. Not anymore though.

But, I agree that of (forgive me for being honest) the two fantasies, I personally would vote for the Catholic in Union with the Bishop of Rome so far. That is a basically throw away statement considering I still see the christian God as a not very good moral standand if we look at the Christian God closely.

I will research these punch and judy guys right off.

Never heard of them.

Thanks!

Orthodox apologists sometimes confuse what Augustine taught with what the Catholic Church actually teaches. No, they’re not always the same thing. Often, Protestants are actually more taken with Augustine than Catholics.

Thanks. I’ve always been confused about the whole “inheriting guilt” thing, since I’ve seen it mentioned by a number of non-Catholics when discussing original sin (from the Catholic perspective).

No it hasn’t. CCC paragraph 405: "Although it is proper to each individual, original sin does not have the character of a personal fault in any of Adam’s descendants. It is a deprivation of original holiness and justice, but human nature has not been totally corrupted: it is wounded in the natural powers proper to it; subject to ignorance, suffering, and the dominion of death; and inclined to sin - an inclination to evil that is called “consupiscence”.

My bolding.

I think any Orthodox Christian who actually reads the teaching of the Church on this issue would disagree - but I’ve read plenty of Orthodox literature that disagrees strongly with what they “think” the Catholic Church teaches - namely, they “think” Catholics believe that we inherited guilt from Adam, but again this is not what the Catholic Church teaches or has ever taught.
