From Antichrist to Brother in Christ: How Protestant Pastors View the Pope

More than half of evangelical pastors say Pope Francis is their brother in Christ.

More than one-third say they value the pope’s view on theology, and 3 in 10 say he has improved their view of the Catholic Church.

Those are among the findings of a new study of 1,000 Protestant senior pastors, released this week from Nashville-based LifeWay Research.

Overall, the survey found that many Protestant pastors have taken a liking to Pope Francis.

Nearly 4 in 10 say the pope, known for his humility and concern for the poor, has had a positive impact on their opinions of the Catholic Church. Almost two-thirds view Pope Francis as a genuine Christian and “brother in Christ.”

However, half of Protestant pastors say they do not value Pope Francis’ opinion on matters of theology.

Been hearing a lot of whore of Babylon talk. Michael savage, who has historically defende the church in the past, has attacked the Pope relentlessly and shamefully imo. Limbaugh is all over him.

Local radio talk show host Joyce Kaufman here in Florida is really pushing the whore of Babylon stuff. Normally I listen to them cause I agree with most of the political things they Stand for. This has had me upset for a while now.

Here, a pastor on one of the shows talking about Catholics referring to the Pope as “father” when it clearly says not to do that.

It really is an all out attack by many. Not shocked.

I really don’t think it has anything to do with francis but I see that technolgy has made catholics who want to be know the faith more and communicate the faith with non catholics in the United states.

I admit to being surprised that Franklin Graham and then Mike Huckabee stuck up for the Pope when it came to Obama inviting all those inappropriate people to the Pope’s White House visit.

But then a couple days later Franklin Graham posted up a “Welcome” note on Facebook to Pope Francis, and how the Pope had declared a Jubilee year for forgiveness and how Mr. Graham was grateful that they can always go to Jesus for forgiveness, etc. I saw it as a backhanded swipe at Catholicism and also a misunderstanding of our beliefs on forgiveness.

And the amount of just absolutely hateful comments from protestants towards Catholics in the comments sections on news articles has been pretty sad. I try very hard to respond only with Christian charity.

I didn’t say anything about hate in that part of my post. I just thought the message came across like, “Welcome, Pope Francis. But you’re wrong.” The hate I referenced was in the comments section, and yes, there were a number of people who were saying pretty awful things. Not everyone, by any means.

I watched an episcopalian priest (a spanish name I don’t think it was the catholic priest that left to marry his girlfriend) on tv use the time he was had to tell everyone how the Catholic faith teaches a false doctrine and that the episcopal church welcomes everyone even homosexuals. I thought that was not very respectful to use that time to try to tell gays, lesbians and such to come to the episcopal church and to spread a lie about the Catholic Church.

Ahh. It is interesting that they would bring a former Roman Catholic priest, now Episcopalian, to comment on the Pope’s visit. Not sure who made that decision.

Now, that being said, there are still some fairly serious disagreements between us and the Catholic Church. The Pope is the titular head of the Catholic Church and so people will challenge him as it’s representative. It is too bad that people will let their passions get in the way of their sense. That hinders communication and just makes for hard feelings on both sides.

I personally like Pope Francis and followed his visit with interest and admiration. I like the way he conducts himself and mostly agreed with what he had to say.

I suspect, but can’t know with certainty, that ultra-conservative political talk-show guys like Limbaugh and Savage don’t like him because some of his views (climate change, capitalism, death penalty, etc) which are viewed by some staunch conservatives as leftist in nature, and therefore not favorable.

I even heard Sean Hannity on FOX, who I thought was Catholic, say something unfavorable about Pope Francis. It was something to the effect that if the Pope wants countries like the US to take in refuges from Syria and Libya, etc, that maybe he should invite all the refuges to come and live at the Vatican, which I thought wasn’t very charitable.

I also read that conservative Supreme Court justices Scalia, Alito, and Thomas (all Catholics and among the most conservative in their judicial opinions) chose not to attend the Pope’s address to Congress, although Catholic judges Roberts, Sotomayor, and Kennedy, who are deemed more moderate or liberal by many, attended.

I myself have had some problems with some of the rhetoric by Pope Francis. I have had some disagreements with family members.

My problem has to do with the fact that Pope Francis seems to buy into this liberation theology. He does come from Argentina and much of South America are certainly wrapped up in this notion. The world sees America as greedy capitalists and to a degree I can understand why.

However, the United States has been more charitable (much of which comes from private donations) to the world than all of the countries in the world…combined. I can list ALL of the ways whenever there is a natural disaster, it is the US that leads the way. How much has this country given for AIDS relief in Africa. There is a long list.

The FREE MARKET (world calls it capitalism) is the best friend to the poor. Show me these SOCIALIST countries and I will show you how the poor have little to no hope of ever changing their situation. Socialism can be viewed as the CASTE SYSTEM and I can show you how there are similarities.

If these SOCIALIST UTOPIAS are so great, then why are so many of the citizens of those “utopias” trying to ESCAPE them? How many thousands of people trying to escape Cuba’s great system died trying to get here? How many Americans are trying to break into Mexico? How many of those socialist South American countries are controlled and run by despots? I saw Pope Francis accept a crucifix in the shape of communist symbol. I have not yet heard if it was returned. It should be, if it was not and I do not care all that much if the Vatican acted displeased.

Plus, when the Pope visited Cuba and befriended the Castro brothers, the dissidents were neglected. Again, America was criticized for the embargo. I did not hear much criticism if any of the violations of human rights that Cuban leaders have guilty of for 60 years. It was all about America being at fault?

This is the first time this Pope has ever been to America. It is rather obvious to me what he has thought of capitalism his entire life. Meanwhile how many things have benefited humanity as a result of this FREE MARKET? I can list all of the things that have benefited humanity. From planes, medicine and toothbrushes. Can anyone here list all of the things socialism has given to us? What? Kind of hard to be innovative in a system that does not allow you to be innovative.

Do not get me started with the AGW global warming scam. They do not even call it that anymore. They call it climate change and they use this more AMBIGUOUS term in order to include ALL weather patterns. They can perpetuate the 1.5 trillion dollar INDUSTRY. I mean there was more told to us about the polar ice caps melting, when they are NOT MELTING, than the systematic murders of Christians at hand of ISIS. There are people being burned and buried alive cause of their faith in Christ and we have to be more concerned about something that is the equivalent of bigfoot?

So yeah, there is a lot for me to be upset about. I do not think this Pope is “evil” or the so called “whore of babylon.” I can show a lot of protestant leaders who are guilty of A LOT. I do believe this Pope is a good man. I think he is wrong about certain things. Mainly his liberation theology and his socialist leanings.
