I also loved when Yoda set fire to the tree.

It was such a Yoda thing to do!
 
I dunno. His experience with his father doesn’t seem like something one could easily forget, even after 40 years.
 
I haven’t seen the movie yet, though I think I’ve heard just about every spoiler.

I will say Mark Hamill seems to be really upset that they changed his character to something he himself doesn’t recognize. I know a lot of fans that seem to have the same problem you and he does, that Luke seems to have rejected the central aspect of his original character, that of believing there is good in people.
 
I have heard a lot of complaining about that but I agree. He was a little wacky about it, but the act of burning the tree was right in line with Yoda. I think the Yoda lines, if you disregard him acting like a crazy person, was the best writing in the movie
 
This kind of crass shift is why I have not and will never watch it, nor any other Star Wars movie again. Excreta. Fooled me once…

a 40 year franchise w/ absolutely no end in sight?

enjoy it, all the movies are pg-13
