Most live their lives failing to grasp the full point of that living. Because human beings perceive, think, act, and feel primarily in terms of dualities, much is overlooked. I have found it helpful to speak of the mystery of darkness in referring to that which is missed in the process of existence. It is the that mystery which is the one, the totality, the eternal. But we, who are finite, cannot experience the whole of this mystery. We must process it piecemeal. So then, for most, it remains unknown.
But it is this darkness that brought us forth, sustains us, moves us and ultimately calls us to return to our origin. It is the darkness that moves the universe and will ultimately call it to its cold, icy and entropic end. But we experience it most profoundly in human experience through death, destruction, chaos. Such experiences most often leave us confused, angry, fearful, frustrated, and grieving because we struggle to comprehend their full meaning in the continuum of our existence.
But, within human experience, there is a bridge to this mystery that most never cross. The very actuality of life and the very certainty of death force us to regard the space and time of our lives as causal and finite in nature. We too easily settle for this perception and most avoid reflection upon this realty unless it is thrust upon them by circumstance.
But the union of these two mysteries, the mysteries of life and death, in the cosmos is characterized in all classical theories about existence and takes us beyond mere causality and finitude. Somehow, through observation of this cyclical play, we glimpse something of the eternal. We capture a glimpse of the mystery of darkness which is the only true mystery. It is the beginning and the end. Existence and nothingness are as complementary but exclusive realities of the totality of being. Indeed, they are one. At least, this is what I have slowly come to see in my many years upon this earth.
Only ask yourself. Do we not live this mystery even now? These are interesting times. This era will make for some interesting history for those who will be born and late enough in this century to examine this particular span of human events. I have come to observe that the current generation in any era is always in darkness. They are always in darkness about themselves, about the true historical synergy which they collectively create and in which they individually live. Such meaning cannot be fully understood from the inside, from a single perspective. Such is the nature of collective human experience and of universal time.
The darkness of the present will be the light of the future. Other eyes than ours will behold that light. We who stumble now in this darkness are their teachers unaware.
