From this forum, I get the impression that the American (Catholic) Church is a big ol'. . .

Not all of it, there are some good priests and some good Bishops. Actually you will find a great deal of people who probably represent the most active Catholic in the United States as they are open to talking about it and sharing the faith.

So maybe we are just showing the best case scenario, which might then be a bad thing, or it could be a good thing. Maybe the most active Catholics just have very high standards and it really isn’t so bad, or maybe it is really bad and those areas where it is really bad are not even caring about the faith.

There are problems all over the world with disobedience but there is some good things on the horizon. What we should all worry about is our own personal fidelity as we are all in charge of “sales”, there is very little “management type” here on the forums.

Actually, in many ways, Rome is quite happy with the United States, especially when it is compared to Europe. Depending on how the question is asked, Catholics in the US are attending Mass at about 5 to 6 times the rate of people in most European countries.

The American (Catholic) Church? Sounds like a new Protestant denomination?
 
Well, we did have that big sex abuse scandal, but on the other hand we still get our fair share of curial postings showing that Rome can still find at least a few good men. We may do more than our share of complaining to Roman dicasteries, but we also give quite a bit to Peter’s Pence, etc. We’ve had theologian’s banned from passing themselves off as Catholic, but we’ve also had one elevated to the cardinalate for his work. We may not have the best liturgical practices but we are at least showing up in far greater percentages than some other places. All in all, it’s a rather mixed bag.

If you really want to know about pains in the neck, think about the Church in the Netherlands…:rolleyes: (My apologies to any Dutch on the boards, you’ve just caused too many problems in recent memory to pass unnoticed)
 
…no more so than any other nation with Catholics…praise the Lord and pray the rosary:thumbsup:

I thought the general perception was completely the opposite: that the conservative dinosaurs in Rome were holding back the progress of the Catholic Church in America…
 
All this talk about the American Catholic Church reminds me of the reply of Pope John Paul II when asked about the American Catholic Church. He simply stated that “There is no American Catholic Church. There is the Roman Catholic Church in America”.

combined with the ability to link to files, it means that you can’t upload a file to CAF for the BBS to share, but you could put it elsewhere and provide link to it.

There IS an American Catholic Church: The Metropolitan Byzantine Catholic Church Sui Iuris of Pittsburgh (The Ruthenian Catholic Church)… of course, it’s a small fraction of Catholics in the US… but it is uniformly and exclusively American. (And is part of the USCCB.)

For those who want a truly American Catholic Church, the search is over… it’s been around for 70 years… But most would find it QUITE different.

Now, the USCCB has differentiated the US Roman Catholics in praxis from the majority of the world’s Roman Catholics. Then again, much of Europe has likewise done so from what i’ve read.

This has been done consistent with the authority that Rome has allowed these conferences. Not always for the better, but always within their authority.
