Timothy 1

[23] No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments

Would the aliments possible his nerves and maybe he was too nervous? What are some possible ideas of what his aliments could be?

wine was a kind of universal remedy for a lot of things throughout history, so Timothy could have been advised to rely on it as a sedative, for indigestion, for infection or any of a number of reasons. Oil as well was a common remedy. Does it matter?

I think this is where people started the excuse that they were imbibing “for medicinal purposes!”

It may be that Timothy had become a bit overly ascetical in his practice of the faith. And as we all know, Paul preached moderation in all things. He may have wanted to nip in the bud any tendency towards being Pharisaical, something he had been so into himself before his conversion.

I’ve always heard that for most people–though certainly it would be different for small or large adults and can also vary for many other health conditions that 1 glass of wine a day is good for one’s health–two is neutral–and three is Slightly bad.

My own personal rule used to be never more than 3 drinks a day–but since I now have diabetes and high triglycerides I try not to drink.

Would most Catholics think that 3 drinks a day was a good moderate rule?

At what point would most Catholics think that drinking had become excessive and that they were abusing their body which is the temple of the Holy Spirit?

One thing I’ve heard on the subject of drinking wine with your water is that the water at the time was really not all that clean…not like the super sanitized stuff we have now, so the wine was to keep you from getting sick from drinking just straight water.

as for 3 drinks a day being too much, that would have alot to do with whether you have to have those 3 drinks a day, or if they are just tasty…3 every day does seem a bit extreme to me but I don’t drink much anymore. If you mean just 3 in a given day, but not necessarily every day, then that should be fine generally speaking.

wine seem to be something that was use a lot by jews during that time. it appears a lot in sacred scriptures. even jesus drank wine in the wedding of canaa. personally i don’t drink much at all. once in a while is ok but drinking three cups of wine daily for me is a lot.May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be Adored, Glorified, Loved & Preserved throughout the world, now & forever. Sacred Heart of Jesus, please pray for me. Saint Jude, Worker of Miracles, please pray for me. Saint Jude, Helper of the Hopeless, please pray for me. Amen."🙂
