What members are from other denominations or churches besides the catholic church?

What church do you attend?

Why do you come to the catholic message board?

If you converted to catholicism what church did you used to attend?

As for myself I am here for research and just to be a well rounded person. That way with a better understanding of things i’ll be able to have a more well rounded conversation with people. I can agree to disagree on any issue, as such. But i’m not closed minded as to seeing why others believe what they believe. Just curious.

I am from a Baptist background [don’t believe in once saved always saved]. Sometimes attending a Church of Christ [agree a lot with them, good doctrine, makes sense] or Church of God In Christ [love the music and tone of church] with friends. Never been to a catholic church.

Not looking to convert. I am baptized and satisfied with my beliefs.

🙂

Welcome to the board! I am a Catholic, but I was attending a youth, Presbyterian Church with my girlfriend for a while last year and earlier this year. I hope you enjoy your time here!

Stu.

I was raised (sort-of) a lutheran. Fell by the wayside from a lack interest by the time I was 20.
In my 30’s, I spent 18 months with the jws.
At 52, I began to really search for God. I found Him in the Holy Catholic Church.
I’m almost 59 and, finally, happy.

Early life Independant Christian Church, teen years Assembly of God then non-denominational -

Adult convert to the Catholic Church!

I was brought up loosely Episcopalian and for short time attended a non-denominational church as a girl. My parents took me out of that non-denom when they tried to proselytize them away from the Episcopal church. I was confirmed as a young teen and would have been content to remain in the ECUSA but my father died and my mother began looking for spiritual experiences, so we ended up in the Assemblies of God. I was a member of the AoG for about 20, earning a B. A. in Bible and religious education at one of their Bible colleges. Before I had graduated, though, I had returned to the ECUSA after reading C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien, where, once again, I thought I would remain for rest of my life. Married a non-practicing Catholic who was attending the ECUSA at that time. We moved and I began to wonder about the changes in the ECUSA from certainty towards relativism. Still wanting to know the fullness of truth, and intrigued by the claims of the Catholic Church I read several books by Catholic saints, prayed and entered RCIA and was received into the Catholic Church Easter Vigil of 1989 (my husband returned to the Church too) where, through thick and thin, we have been truly happy ever since.

I was brought up Baptist, but attended church rarely. I was encouraged to read the Bible though. I attended a Catholic church at 16 and wanted to convert. My friends and family talked me out of doing so. I lost my faith and went search.

I spent time as an agnostic, and looked into WIccan. When my hubby researched his Jewish roots, I wanted to convert but something held me back.

Due to the influence of a wonderful Christian lady, I got saved and eventually attended a Baptist church for three years. The church was so far to the right that it made fundamentalists look liberal.😃

After my pastor announced that we shouldn’t see The Passion of The Christ due to the fact that Mel Gibson was Catholic, I began to research Catholism again. I read Karl Keating’s wonderful book and started coming to this site.

I am now in RCIA. Hooray.

I attend the Catholic Church. My family were CINO’S (sorta Catholic’s In Name Only) and I was baptised in the Church, even though I’d never knew a thing about it or who the Church was, or what it believed. If you’d have asked me from age 5 to 40, I still would have said I was Catholic. Dumb huh? I briefly attended a Baptist church in our neighborhood a few times as a young boy. My parents had no opinions one way or the other, we didn’t go to church as a family. In my late 20’s I began a career as a professional wedding and studio photographer. This afforded me the opportunity to attend many (hundreds) ceremonies and observe all different religions. While they were all “nice”, whenever I’d go to a Catholic Church, the feeling was different. I’d usually arrive early, before anyone else and I would sit in the sanctuary and get my notes and thoughts together about the job I was there to do. In a Catholic Church, I’d always sensed there was something special there. I couldn’t put my finger on it, but I felt like I wasn’t there alone. When I observed a Catholic ceremony, I could tell it was the real deal, the “E” ticket ride. I’d always rationalize that some day when I got serious about God, I’d come into the Church for real. Of course, being the copious sinner that I was and having all the “fun” I was having, that date was none too close. Years went by, I’d married a CINO Catholic girl and we got married-in a protestant church. Because she’d been married before and believing all the untruths about the Catholic Church that our secularized and protestant friends tell us, we just didn’t bother. We also briefly attended a few protestant churches-they were nice, the people were nice, but the spirit just didn’t take hold of us there. When the kids came along, we knew we wanted them in a Catholic school. Many reasons for that, but we enrolled them. After a short time, we met a family that actually attended and they invited us to Church. The rest is history and we came into full communion with the Church a few years later. We’re home-at long last. Nothing else has ever felt so complete, and so right. I remember the light bulb moments, when I’d realized that this was the true original Church. I couldn’t contain myself-I ran to my wife and told her, in an excited voice that I very seldom ever use! Since then, I’ve been on a bender trying to learn as much as possible. It’s intoxicating. The more you learn, the more you want to know. Sorry, I’ve rambled. I’m a born-again Catholic, who started out a baptised Catholic, floated through nothing-Baptist-Lutheran-Church of Christ-, and then Catholic again, this time for real. It’s great to know that we never have to search again, we’ve found our relationship with Jesus in the Catholic Church. And it’s for keeps.

I was born a catholic and attended the english rite until I had fallen away from the church in my late teens.

I spent about 6 years living a life of misery, without God and seeking my own pleasures and self satisfaction.

Until…

I met my husband. He has only ever attended the Tridentine (latin) rite of the Catholic faith and I now am proud to attend the latin mass.

I have been a practicing traditional catholic for 9 years. I must say that I have learnt alot about myself. I know that I am unworthy, and am nothing without God.

We are called to deny ourselves and carry our cross every day. To be an imitator of Our Lord Jesus Christ. In whom all salvation is possible.

For me, it is NOT enough to just believe in Jesus, we must receive him sacramentally and follow him, sacrificing and making reparation for our sins.

God has shown me love and mercy. Humans are so ungrateful, and do not consider that being a catholic is a tough life. A life full of sacrifice.

So many people get this idea that just believing is enough. I’m afraid - that in my opinion, for me, that is not so. I rely on the truth of my faith, and God to show me the way to my God. That is (for me) in the Roman Catholic Church.

“Then Jesus said to his disciples: If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
For he that will save his life, shall lose it : and he that shall lose his life for my sake, shall find it.
For what profiteth a man if he should gain the whole world and suffereth the loss of his own soul?” (St Matt Chp 16 v 24-26)

My churches:

Elim Pentecostal Church, Bradford

Church on the Way, Bradford (now a Calvary Chapel)

The Vine Christian Fellowship, Crawley

Elim Pentecostal Church, Aberystwyth (which left the Elim and became Tan Y Cae Fellowship but I think it might be Elim again now)

St Michael and All Angels, Aberystwyth (Anglican Church in Wales)

A baptist church in Northampton

The Modern Jesus Army (hoorah!) - I must post their website one day.

Trinity Baptist Church, Fleetwood

New Life Community Church, Bangor (now called Bangor Community Church)

The Catholic Church.

That list excludes all the churches that I was only in for a short time or had other involvement with. In Aberystwyth I went to the Methodists sometimes (and their band played at our wedding) and studied with both the Presbyterians and Congregationalists. I think I went to every English church at least once except for the Brethren and to most of the Welsh churches. In Northampton I sometimes went to a Particular Baptist Church too. Before settling in the Baptist church of Fleetwood I was in a Pentecostal church down the road in Cleveleys until I couldn’t cope with the Prosperity gospel any more, and went to a really depressing pentecost service with the methodists where the minister told us that the church didn’t have a role any more!

I was raised Baptist and had largely non-denominational theology and a love for the Anglican style of worship. I was pretty sure of my beliefs and their scriptural support. Then I stumbled onto the Catholic Answers website and then onto these forums. It led me to do a lot of research. Big mistake. Now I’m convinced of the truth of the authority of the Catholic Church and the veracity of Her teachings, and I have to go through the hassle of converting. 😛 Really, it’s both the best and the toughest thing that’s ever happened to me.

It depends what you mean by believe. If you truly believe in Jesus, then you will trust Him when He says that the most important thing you can do is to love God with all of your heart, all of your soul and all of your mind (apologies if I’ve messed up this paraphrase). But how do you love God? You follow His commandments. So therefore, in a way, believing in Jesus is all you need. There’s just a big footnote attached to that word, “believe”!!

Does this sound about right to everyone else?

But if you became a Mormon now, you wouldn’t have to “go through the hassle of converting” to it later on, would you! 😃 It will be a “one stop” changeover! 😉

Raised Mormon, I was told that the Catholic Church was evil, then I found that I had been kidnapped at a very young age by my grandmother who I was left with on weekends., my birth parent finally found me six years ago, the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. I still love the one who kidnapped me, my LDS grandmother. This faith is everything I could have ever dreamed of, along with the good and the bad.

“Authentic Christianity is a relationship with Jesus Christ. Its not proven, its not dictated or mandated by our own performance, by how much we do, how often we do it. If God hadn’t sent Christ we would have no hope. Christ brought something that did away with the whole game, he brought the Gospel, the Gospel says all bets are off, trust me I have redeemed you. It’s that simple.” …From Called to be Free
