Frugalty "hacks" that worked for you?

Not so much a hack, but we purchase all cleaners, cleansers, and paper waste products at the Dollar General stores.
We try and do the same, too.

I think that I mentioned it in another post in this thread…

I try and get whatever I can for many items at the dollar stores. We especially like the Dollar Tree stores in our area.

I like getting my office supplies there, like pens and mechanical pencils, and note pads and post-its, for example.

I also like their Housewares section, too. I have gotten some really nice microwave containers there, and some nice baking pans, too.

I’ll also get whatever I can from their frozen and refrigerated section, too.

They have good buys on ice cream products for a $1.00. 🙂

Good idea. I also use white vinegar to clean instead of buying cleaning products a lot.

.
The same Dollar General has quality spices that are very inexpensive as well. I buy 99% of my spices there. Sometimes some sodas too.

Batteries are also another good one there too.

It’s funny, I used to work with a woman who bought all her kids Christmas presents at the dollar store. She would take $200 and buy exactly that amount of presents for her kids. She once asked me what child wouldn’t want to wake up on Christmas morning to 100 presents under a tree? As for the quality…

Well, my husband says that you, “Get a dollar’s worth of product for $1, or you get what you pay for” when you go to any type of a dollar store.

I think that it can be true when you’re talking about quantity with some products, as I think that you’ll notice when it comes to sizes of products.

For example, with some sizes of the snacks and candies, you’ll get smaller-sized bags of products that would be equivalent to about $1’s worth, compared to if you bought the regular-sized product in a supermarket.

But if you’re watching your budget and if that is the size you want or need, and that is what you have to spend at that time, then to me, that’s alright and there’s nothing wrong with doing that. 🙂

I like to buy the smaller assorted bags of candies there, for example. Right now they have their assortments out for Halloween.

However, you can also get your name brand products there that are the same as what you can find in your supermarkets for $1 too, and like I said, I also get my pens and pencils there, and they are the same type of product that you can find elsewhere except you can get them for $1, so it works out well for me. I’m easy to please. 😉

My biggest one lately has been learning to know myself. For example, there’s lots of clothes that are cheap and would be great with just a little alteration. But saving money that way only works if you actually do the alterations, as opposed to having the garment sit on the sewing pile for 2 years. Same thing with cooking - it only works if you buy food that someone really will fix and eat before it goes bad.

Habits can of course be changed, but one shouldn’t expect miracles from one’s self, or instantaneous change.

I recently discovered the dollar store for kid prizes. Stickers and shiny kid stuff really are a lot cheaper there. I also like it for gift bags.

Dollar Tree is AWESOME for a lot of items. Like the ones you stated, but also we’ve picked up food there in a pinch. And usually we don’t want the bigger bags of chips!
