Frustrated by Birth Control Banner Ads

ARGH!!!

Pandora, Deviantart, even FACEBOOK has been putting more and more ads out there advertising the newest in birth control! It’s soooooo frustrating! I mean, why on earth are they adversiting these things, especially when kids can easily see it? I mean, lets take Pandora. I wrote them a rather nasty email about a family-friendly raido station I created to play when I babysat my nephew. He loved to dance to music with me, and we just loved listening to music together. (he’s really young though…around 2 when I was sitting him) and despite specificying a station that played only “family friendly” music, they kept blasting ads for the nuva ring every 10 minutes! I made a mad dash for my computer when I first heard it since I didn’t think I 2 year old needed to hear an ad about a bunch of women discussing birth control.

I guess I’m just ranting, but it seems like you just can’t get away from it! GRR!

Dealing with ads is a part of modern life. Don’t click on them if you’re not interested. In the case of Facebook, I believe that you can close certain ads, which in turn lets the company know that you’re not interested in that particular product. They can replace the ad with one for the newest t-shirt company.

I know exactly what you mean! Whenever such a commercial comes on tv, I shut it off, not because there are any kids around but because it’s just so disgusting and so demeaning.

Facebook definitely lets you filter the ads. I have been working on this for a while so that now I’m getting some Catholic ads, clothing ads, and pro-life ads. It might take you a week or two of constant filtering (you click the x on the top right and leave feedback. You’ve got a few options like uniteresting, misleading, offensive…)

Yesterday, I was listening to the ‘family-friendly’ local Christian radio station while at home in the morning with my young children. I was cleaning house, when all of a sudden, I hear a promo for a radio show this weekend that will focus upon Christian teachings about healthy attitudes about sex and how wives can be responsive to their husbands. I mean, this show won’t air until 10:30 at night, and they are promoting it with very explicit language in the middle of the morning. I ran to the radio to turn it down, but by the time I got there (big rambling ranch of a house), the whole promo had been completed. I was upset, and considered calling to complain, but like a coward, I did not do anything. But really, why do they need to air clips in the morning from a sexually-explicit radio show that is not scheduled until well after prime time when all the babies are in bed? Can we not even trust Christian sources to be prudent about exposing our little ones to adult sexual themes and language? What has happened to the Christian culture? Of course, this was not a Catholic radio station (we don’t have one locally), but I would sincerely hope that a Catholic station would be more cautious and wise.

Yes, I am grateful for facebook’s ability to filter ads. I’ve been gradually getting them to clean up a bit.

So they are not being exposed to anything giving them the wrong idea either. I agree that it is best to be up front with children, but children their ages should not be told anything about what happens between adults sexually.

Sex is a beautiful gift for the married couple, but it should not be laid bare for impressionable ears. You know, I have actually noticed my christian radio station playing more “marital” type ads as well. It seems that sex sells, and even christian radio stations are getting in on that cash cow.

When I emailed pandora to chew them out about the nuvaring ad when I was babysitting, they told me that their ads are age-targeted, so I changed my age to read “85” and I don’t get birth control ads. I do, however, get lots of ads about “bucket lists” and life insurance!
