Are there any diffrences in General between FSSP parishes and SSPX parishes? I mean are there fundamental differences?

The FSSP is in “full” communion with Rome. SSPX is not in “full” communion. Other than that they both celebrate the Mass of 1962 in the same way.

I am really fond of both FSSP and SSPX. Both recognize the Holy Father in Rome, contrary to SSPV or CMRI.

I know that having said that I’m going to get “corrected” by others. 🙂

It depends on what you mean by a fundamental difference. I attend both and, in terms of devotional experience, find them very similar.

The SSPX appear to be more free to criticize and speak out directly about problems in authority than the FSSP.

That’s because they’re borderline schismatic (not technically in schism, I know, but too close for comfort) and do not operate within any canonical structure of the Church. So this is a little like comparing the Carthusians and the Methodists and saying the Methodists seem freer to speak out.

No, I don’t think it’s fair to compare the SSPX to Methodists, that shows an animus against them far out of proportion to their issues.

I like your logic Mark, simple, but not overly thoughtful.

A sad state of affairs though if takes a “borderline schismatic” to “speak out directly about problems”.

The real soldiers in this whole battle against modernism are the LAY PEOPLE- us. Priests are like doctors on the battle field.

No priest, SSPX or not, is completely free to speak his mind. That is the beauty of these forums. People can speak the truth without fear of repercussions at work, etc.

One practical thing I would encourage all Catholics to do is get involved actively in an apostolate of RESTORATION.

For example, there are many pre-Vatican II prayerbooks and books that are completely out of print. Why not TYPE these out and put them online? I have done this myself. Why not get some traditional catholic books into the hands of young people who go to the Novus Ordo, etc.

It’s practical things like that, that laypeople can do-----things that are more productive than debating whether the SSPX is in schism or not, or whether the FSSP has somehow “compromised”.

Let’s not hurl insults at the SSPX or the FSSP, but focus on converting liberal “Catholics” back to the faith.

Great suggestions, Trady!

The priests at FSSP chapels are in good standing with the Holy Father and have full faculties; the priests of the SSPX are all suspended and thus not permitted to publicly celebrate the Sacraments.

I second this suggestion! This is something that is already being done at Saints’ Books below. So if you have anything to contribute we’d be glad to help distribute them. 😃

We’ll be making Fr. Paul O’Sullivan’s book on Saint Philomena available shortly.

These books can be priceless helps to the readers!

Thus, the validity of some of the Sacraments are a roll of the dice, as some require the authority of the local ordinary.

This too is a valid point to warn others about.

How about this.
First, attend an FSSP Mass.
Next, attend a SSPX Mass.
Then, YOU tell US.

Maybe he’s interested in differences that lie deeper than what words they recite and what cut of vestments they wear? Seriously dude, if someone asks a question and you’re too busy or insufficiently knowledgeable to answer, there’s no need to post just to say, “I’m not going to answer.”

The parishes, as opposed to the priests…

Specifically, the FSSP parishes are set up by the local bishop, and the FSSP invited to run them, or in rare cases, the FSSP might approach the bishop to get permission to set up a parish. The FSSP priests are expected to participate in the diocesan functions as well, such as the Chrism Mass, which generally will be by the OF missal. FSSP parishes often have a priest in residence.

SSPX parishes, if old enough, were likewise set up as indult parishes with the local bishop’s permission; ones set up later are set up without the local ordinary’s official permission, and in some cases, any permission from the ordinary. Some have a circuit SSPX priest, others have a resident rector.

Perhaps the SSPX detractors here can explain why they are not in full communion with Rome. Most people know that Archbishop Levebrve ordained four bishops without permission, but why was he forced to do that? What is the deeper issue?

… probably also a good reason to choose the FSSP over a diocesan Mass.

Here is a picture taken three weeks ago of a “borderline schismatic” priest of the SSPX offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass on perhaps the most privileged altar in the Vatican - in St Peter’s Basilica on the Clementine altar in the crypt below the main altar over the bones of St. Peter.

Apparently the Pope doesn’t hold quite the same views of the SSPX as some of the posters at C.A. I don’t think you’ll find many heretics or schismatics saying Mass down there.
