I may be totally wrong about this, but it seems that the majority of the FSSP’s apostolates are small chapels and not like at full “parish-like” settings where the diocese has given them whole church buildings. However, it seems that the Institute is very good at getting entire church buildings, nice ones too, like the St. Francis de Sales oratory or the Shrine of Christ the King. The Institute has been getting really nice churches, at least in the US, I have no idea how it is abroad.

How is it that the Institute gets all these churches, but the FSSP gets hospital chapels. I know they have some full parishes like the one in Rome or Sacramento or Ottawa. But, are the majority of FSSP apostolates parish-like?

You think the bishops favor one over the other?

I know that the Institute tends to remodel the sanctuaries and churches of their newly aquired apostolates (look at what they did to St. Francis de Sales and what they’re going to do to the Shrine in Chicago). For the FSSP people out there, does the FSSP do this, i.e. remodel the apostolates?

Please, I’d like to hear your comments about this.

The two organizations have different approaches, which both have merit.

The Institute was blessed in its early days in the U.S. to have had a major benefactor who made generous contributions towards the restoration of its initial churches. This helped them acquire the reputation of being church restorers. This benefactor has been tapped out, and new projects, such as Kansas City and Chicago, are taking much longer as a result. Nowadays, they also take on more humble chapels, such as St. Anthony of Padua in West Orange, NJ, and Our Mother of Perpetual Help in Santa Clara, CA.

The Institute tries to obtain all-TLM churches. They don’t want to share parishes with an OF congregation. Oakland, CA and Milwaukee are the only places they do this.

The FSSP is blessed with more priests and seminarians. They believe that the TLM should be introduced wherever possible. This has led to church-sharing arrangements. Also note that in absolute numbers rather than in proportion, the FSSP has about as many traditional churches as the Institute. Consider St. Lawrence in Harrisburg, PA, Our Lady of the Rosary in Dayton, OH, and Holy Rosary in Indianapolis as examples.

Let’s remember that it is often the OF congregation that subsidizes a beautiful church that an EF congregation uses. Without them, many traditional churches would not survive.
