Thought this was interesting. Scroll down to “Commemorative Events”
I found that interesting.

• Baptisms are required to be hosted before or after swimming hours, and lifeguards are required for an additional fee.

I never heard of that in Chicago…or that anyone drowned…weird.

Imagine if you baptized in the Amazon river, and you needed people on hand to fight off the piranhas and fish that swim up your private parts. 😊

Imagining it. Okay.
Potential for pain. But, I like the whole teamwork thing. Needing others to help. That makes you wonder who will go to bat for you and who will “leave you behind” rather, leave your behind to the piranhas.

Now I’m reminded of that line from Futurama, where Zoidberg comes in dressed as Jesus and they come under attack.

“Help me, Jesus!”
running away I help those who help themselves!”

This might be the greater expense:
Applicants must submit two documents to satisfy insurance requirements. A (1) “Certificate of Insurance in the amount of $1,000.000.00 worth of General Liability coverage that names the Chicago Park District as additional insured” must be submitted for the event and the date(s) of all set-up and tear-down for such event occurring on Chicago Park District property. Applicants must also submit an (2) Endorsement issued under their General Liability policy of insurance for the event that reflects that the Chicago Park District is an additional insured for the event.

It would have to be a large baptism ceremony to pay so much money, and jump through so many hoops. :o

I wonder if the priest that drowned that newborn baby in church felt that the baby should have done something to stop him.

But, that makes me sad to think about. I have no idea if the man just made an innocent mistake.

That is so different from people who apparently ask for permits to get baptisms in the CPD. I have no idea what religious organizations even do this. Is this like mass wedding type things that the moonies do? Like tons of children/adults being baptised at one time in a large area? Outside of a church?
I know these questions seem dumb to believers, but I really don’t have a clue about this one. Well, let’s be frank here. I don’t have much of a clue about many things. And, I don’t even know a single person named Frank.

It is normally large evangelical organizations. Say a week after the crusade, Billy Graham, Greg Laurie, WOW Jam etc. comes to town and the thousands answer yes to the altar call. For those new Christians many such organizations and the local churches who provide logistic help will hold mass baptisms a few days later for the recently saved… They don’t wait until the next Resurrection Sunday and the joining of a specific church. I remember a mass baptism on Santa Monica beach just north of the pier a few years ago and there was heavy surf that day

I think it is great that some people take a deep meaning and see Lake Michigan as a place to baptize. But I do wonder if the chicago Tribune played up death of the baby who died in b aptism and never said anything about baptisms taking place in the Lake. For Catholic’s submersion has only been accepted since the reorganization of the thinking of RCIA. It use to be a practice and to me now it helps to bridge a better understanding between old protestants and new Catholics today. Those of us who were baptzed with sprinkles never new the difference and I believe it is taking some of us awhile to awaked to our faith. Perhaps they needed to use a little more holy water on some of us. Midget01:D

While I am very confused about the wording of your post, I am glad to meet you.
What re-organization of the thinking of RCIA?
Is there something I should know about this?

A bit sad that litigation gets brought into the practice of Baptism.

I recall reading something about a movement against full immersion baptism in Russia at the time of the Tsars - the Tsar himself commented that if it was safe enough for his children, it was safe enough for everyone.

I was baptised in the river before my conversion. We didnt have to worry about pirhanas, but there are gators in ths river…YIKES!!

What the heck kind of CIA manual are these people using to conduct the rubrics of Baptism?

I’ve heard of confession, but sheesh.

Or are these people unaware that you generally can’t breathe under water?

Re: the infant mentioned in another post in the thread-

How the heck does one drown an infant with baptism? Did he get his seminary degree online? I’ve never seen a full on dunking of an infant. Any infant baptism I’ve ever seen has been pouring over the back/top of the head or sprinkling. Did he dunk the kid or something?

As far as dying during baptism, what better time to die!? It’d be like choking to death on the Host. Better then than in your sleep after that mortal sin, which has not been repented of, from the willful rebellion in one’s heart when unduly comfortable or strayed from your walk.

We all gotta die sometime, might as well be while in a state of grace.
