I was watching EWTN the other day with a very liberal Episcopalian. A commercial for Fulton Sheen’s “Life is Worth Living” show came on, and my friend exclaimed, “Hey, it’s Fulton Sheen!”

Then he said, “He was an anti-Semite.”

I was livid!! Is there any truth to this? Why would he possibly think such a thing?

I didn’t challenge him beyond saying, “I love Fulton Sheen!” because, frankly, he’s much older than me and I was born after His Excellency died.

Please help me out. Thanks!

His cause for sainthood has begun. He was a very holy and articulate man who often referenced the OT and Jewish customs to explain the Catholic Faith. Guess he is anti-semite, just like Mel Gibsonhttp://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon10.gif

*I don’t know of anything. I do know, however, it’s incredibly easy to take quotes out of context. Ask him for proof of this- their are misquotes and flatly made-up quotes abounding. he should be able to give you some kind of documentation, then take it up and check it against a source. I really don’t see Father Sheen as ever saying something like that. *

while it seems in hindsight everyone loves Fulton Sheen, in his day he was considered to definately be on the liberal side of things concerning racial and religious prejudice/discrimination. Of course his spats with archconservative Cardinal Spellman were over different issues.

Anti-semite? Just the opposite. Much more outspoken than others against prejudice. Your friend is misinformed or confusing him with someone else.

I can’t wait until people start calling St.Maximilian Kolbe an antisemite! This is has happened to many times in Poland.😦

Oh yes, magazine writers along with News Services can lift “quotes” out of context to support their own agenda. What a historical person “doesn’t” say can be important too. Since George Washington didn’t write about mosquitos, we can infer there were never any mosquitos in the state of Virginia. Can we say all the things the Pope hasn’t written about to be valid?

Dear Katolik,

You have been using this as your signature line, up until today:

"The Jews are the enemies of God and therefore of our Holy Religion. - Padre Pio"

We have been discussing this on another thread. Are you sure this was said by Padre Pio? Can you give a reference for the quote?

I suggest your friend had Fulton Sheen confused with another Catholic “radio priest,” Father Charles E. Coughlin, who had an enormously popular radio show broadcast from Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak, Michigan, in the 1930s. His sermons did touch on anti-semitism – often vehemently, He was officially suppressed.

Fr. Ambrose,

A Google search of Katolik’s quote shows that it’s not attributed to Padre Pio anywhere on the internet except at the bottom of Katolik’s posts on these very forums.

Yes, the cause for Fulton Sheen’s canonization has begun. Fr. Andrew Apostoli is heading it, I believe.

What do you guys think about that? I mean, in light of Thomas C. Reeeves’ biography *America’s Bishop: The Life and Times of Fulton J. Sheen, *which reports how Sheen lived in extravagant, superfluous homes and faked an educational degree and tried to lie about and hide it later on? All this does not seem very saintly to me.

I do admit that he did do a lot of good, too, though.

Hardly a reputable site. Just scroll on down for their links to such dandies about that “anti-Catholic cult” Opus Dei. And, of course, it is exceedingly unwise to uncritically repeated unattributed quotes.

For a brief bit of research about this quite likely bogus quote attributed to Padre Pio, click here.

This website is ridiculous. They speak about “the perfidious Jews” and the like. It is clearly anti-Semitic and they’ve made up that quote.
I kept looking for the punch line on the site…never found it:bigyikes:

Since that unpleasantness has been thorooughly debunked, how about some quotes from the great Fulton Sheen:

***There are not more than 100 people in the world who truly hate the Catholic Church, but there are millions who hate what they perceive to be the Catholic Church.

A heckler asked Bishop Sheen a question about someone who had died. The Bishop replied, “I will ask him when I get to heaven.” The heckler replied, “What if he isn’t in Heaven?”
The Bishop replied, “Well then you ask him.” 😃

A man told Bishop Sheen he did not believe in hell. The Bishop replied,
“You will when you get there.”

If we are to find the source of the life, truth, and love that is in the world, we have to go to a life that is not mingled with its shadow, death; to a truth that is not mingled with its shadow, error; to a love that is not mingled with its shadow, hate.

There were three sweet monotonies in His (Christs) life - thirty years obeying, three years teaching, three hours redeeming.

Every mother, when she picks up the young life that has been born to her, looks up to the heavens to thank GOD for the gift which made the world young again. But here was a Mother, a Madonna, who did not look up. She looked down to Heaven, for this was Heaven in her arms.

Hence He was given the name of Jesus, which means Savior. It was an irreplaceable name, before which the heavens and the earth trembled and before which our knees bow.

If any one of us could have made own mother, we would have made her the most beautiful woman in the world.

Our brains today are big enough. Could it be that our hearts are too small?

Dirt is nothing more than matter which is in the wrong place.

Every theologian ought to be a mystic; every D.D., or Doctor of Divinity, ought to be a saint. He knows enough to be one, but he does not will it. I am a D.D., but I am not a saint.
May GOD have mercy on my soul.

As Our Lord said, “Where your treasure is, there is your heart also.” Hence the least love of GOD is worth more than the knowledge of all created things.

Did you know that, in Heaven, an angel is a no-body?

Everything we do, whether good or evil, goes down into our unconscious mind… So at the end of every human life there will be pulled out of our subconscious or unconscious mind the record of every thought, word and deed. This will be the basis of our judgment.

The best definition of an adult that was ever given is one who has stopped growing at both ends and has begun to grow in the middle.

Not many men want to die to their lower selves; it costs so much. Some prefer to have a cosmic religion, which neither puts restraint on their pride nor curbs their passions.

We cannot like everyone, but we can love everyone.

When we say we fear GOD, we mean we shrink from hurting One Whom we love.

We do not need a voice that is right when everyone else is right. We need a voice that is right when everyone else is wrong. ***

Considering the site includes several eastern fathers Fr Ambrose shouldn’t be so quick to spread this tripe to every thread he inhabits.
THe anti-semetism of the Russian Church and State has no parallel save the Nazis anyway perhaps to make up for his own church inadequacies he spread this filth.
Now we here about our beloved Fr Sheen this is getting ridiculous are we to trust a nazi website that twists the scriptures itslef to be anti-semetic. Sheen, Padre Pio and our Beloved John Paul 2 are not anti-semites.

Perfidious means faithless. The Jews have no faith in Christ. Ergo they are perfidious.
Sorry, I should of chedcked out the website before hand.

Thou shalt not bear false witness.

I have been PROTESTING about this use of the quote!!!

I have been DEMANDING proof that it was said by Padre Pio.

I was NOT going to sit back and allow an anti-semitic quote like this to appear all over the Forum as a part of Katolik’s signature line.

Why have I been the only voice, and an Orthodox voice at that, to make this protest??? Everybody else did nothing!!!

First They Came for the Jews

First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

Spot on, Mark!

What is more, the “Webmaster” of that site is unprepared to disclose his identity – as if he thinks that this can give him immunity from publishing erroneous or scandalous matter. This reminds me of the time – about 25 years ago – when I attended a Latin Mass in a public hall. After Mass, a pre-pubescent lad challenged my son to “a fight round the back of the hall where God can’t see us”!

In the same vein are the alleged quote by Pope Urban VII spouted by “apparitionists”, e.g.:
“Pope Urban VIII, 1623-1644: ‘In cases which concern private revelations, it is better to believe than not believe, for if you believe, and it is proven true, you will be happy that you have believed, because our Holy Mother asked it. If you believe and it shall be proven false, you will receive all lessings as if it had been true, because you believed it to be true.’” Private Revelation – What Pope Urban had to say about it…
Even though one points out to such persons the fact that there is no attribution offered for the quote, and that Pope Urban gave quite a different slant on the matter – no retractions or alterations may be forthcoming.

On the contrary, I believe that Pope Urban VIII’s decree “Sanctissimus Dominus Noster” given on 13th March 1625 against those who publish asserted revelations without the permission of ordinaries contradicts the above alleged “quote.” This is specifically cited in the Decree of 21st December, 1915, which officially (and once again) prohibited the so called “SECRET OF LA SALETTE.”

Page 594 Acts of the Apostolic See - Official Brief
THE SUPREME SACRED CONGREGATION OF THE HOLY OFFICE GIVES A DECREE CONCERNING THE COMMONLY CALLED “SECRET OF LA SALETTE.”

It has come to the attention of this Supreme Congregation that certain ones are not lacking, even from among the ecclesiastic assemblage who, responses and decisions of this Holy Congregation itself having been disregarded, do proceed to discuss and examine through books, small works and articles edited in periodicals, whether signed or without a name, concerning the so-called Secret of La Salette, its diverse forms and its relevance to present and future times; and, this not only without permission of the Ordinaries, but, also against their ban.

So that these abuses which oppose true piety and greatly wound ecclesiastical authority might be curbed, the same Sacred Congregation orders all the faithful of any region not to discuss or investigate under any pretext, neither through books, or little works or articles, whether signed or unsigned, or in any other way of any kind, about the mentioned subject. Whoever, indeed, violates this precept of the Holy Office, if they are priests, are deprived of all dignity and suspended by the local ordinary from hearing sacramental confessions and from offering Mass: and, if they are lay people, they are not permitted to the sacraments until they repent.

Moreover, let people be subject to the sanctions given both by Pope Leo XIII through the Constitution of the offices and responsibilities against those who publish books dealing with religious things without legitimate permission of superiors and by Urban VIII through the decree “Sanctissimus Dominus Noster” given on 13th March 1625 against those who publish asserted revelations without the permission of ordinaries. However, this decree does not forbid devotion towards the Blessed Virgin under the title of Reconciliatrix commonly of La Salette.

Given at Rome on 21st December, 1915.

Aloisius Castellano, S. R. and U. I. Notary.

The same contrary attitude is demonstrated by propagandists of the alleged (but false) Prophecy of St Nilus – as also published by Robert Moynihan in “Inside the Vatican”, Oct. 1994.
(See A Couple of Prophetic Quotes About today From Ancient Times – scroll to message #4.

One outstanding example of a webmaster seeing the truth and acting upon it is the webmaster of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia who responded warmly to the advice and has removed the “Prophecy of St Nilus” from his site at HERE
