Hi, I’m trying to raise money for WYD 2011 and have been given permission from my priest to have sign-up sheets for buying fudge for Valentine’s Day after this weekend’s Masses. I didn’t want to have any of the actual fudge there because I am supposed to have my sign-up sheets in the foyer (spelling?) right outside the church worship space, and I don’t want people eating it right there in the church because I believe its not reverant. However, I keep reading the Gospel of Matthew where it describes Jesus’ cleansing of the temple, and I’m starting to think I’m doing something wrong. I’m raising money for a religious pilgrimage, but … please help!!!

Don’t worry, you’re fine. It was unclear, but if at all possible, I wouldn’t sell in the church, but in the narthex or outside would be perfectly fine.

I have no idea what a narthex is. I considered using our parish center, but it is usually not used unless it’s for bigger events. It is not inside the church; it is in the hallway or greeting area between the front doors and the wall separating it from the pews and sanctuary.

The narthex is the entrance or lobby area, located at the end of the nave (the end of the aisle the leads to the altar).

Jesus said no dealing with money anywhere in the church.
he wouldn’t even let them conduct business in the outside courts.

This is a very Protestant approach to scripture.

The money changers were beaten down and driven out for their participation of the hypocrisy of the Pharisees.

To restate what I said in my earlier (and self-removed post) and omitting my smart-alecky tone, I suggest that a fuller interpretation of John 2: 13-17 does not preclude the original poster from taking orders for her fudge in the narthex or gathering space of her church in order to raise funds for her to attend WYD 2011.

By the way, will it have walnuts in it and, if so, is there a way I can order some on line? 🙂
