Can a person who has committed suicide be given a catholic funeral?

I think this is a yes, but, situation.

In most cases, yes, because the person suffered from mental illness, or depression that could have impaired their ability to commit mortal sin.

However, in a case like the one in Italy recently, where it was voluntary euthanasia, then no.

As long as there is reasonable doubt about the person’s state of mind, I don’t think the Church would refuse the sacrament.

In case you want to know more, because it really is an intriguing story, his name is Piergiorgio Welby:

Yes, it is now allowable. In past times, suicide was always believed to be mortally sinful no matter what so they weren’t allowed to have a Catholic funeral but in our times, much more is understood about mental conditions that could lower culpability. Because of that, the Church now allows Catholic funerals for folks who died by suicide and entrust their souls to the mercy of God.

As others have said, yes. It used to be that if you comitted suicide, the Church would not allow you a Catholic funeral, but now that we understand the psychology behind suicide a little bit better, that has changed. 🙂
