I attended a funeral this past week and was delighted to hear the priest in his homily talk about purgatory. The priest mentioned the importance of having Masses said for the deceased. Very few people go straight to heaven. We must be perfect as the Father is perfect. Who can qualify? That’s why we need to be purified.
Over the past few months, my family and I have been requesting Masses said for our dead relatives even my great great grandparents. Why? Because we don’t know how long our relatives’ souls remain in purgatory. When Lucia at Fatima asked about various friends who had died, the Blessed Mother said one of the friends would remain in purgatory til the end of time.
Masses are the perfect prayer for souls in purgatory.

I am definitely going to request that the priest beg everyone to pray for my soul at my funeral! Good for your priest for speaking the truth. We need to pray for the dead.

Nowadays you have to be exact. Make sure he tells them to get a Mass said for you. Better yet, ask for the 30 Gregorian Masses said for your soul. We did that for my parents and my brother along with my husband’s parents.

Yes. Good reminder. We have Masses said for our birthdays and wedding anniversary.

I should mention that our other priests say the same thing about purgatory at a funeral Mass. It’s just that this past one is so fresh in my mind that I mentioned it.

I will have to add the Francis Xavier Seelos Shrine in New Orleans to my list. Can Gregorian Masses be requested?

I’ve been using the Cardinal Kung Foundation. However no Gregorian Masses can be requested due to the persecution in China.

I’ve told my family to not let them talk like I’m already in heaven and to make sure they ask for prayers for me.

I read a book, Hungry Souls and in it the souls mention Mass for them is the best prayer. Followed by the Rosary.
