I attended the funeral of a friend today, and I was confused by a couple things. First, the celebrant and notices referred to it as a mass. During the service, the was no Eucharistic portion of the mass, nor was there communion given in any way. The priest at the end said “the mass is ended.” Is there a type of Mass without the Eucharist in any form? Would this not be a service? Maybe the word mass was used to avoid confusion?

As you point out, there cannot be a Mass without a Liturgy of the Eucharist and at minimum the priest’s reception of communion. As @TheLittleLady said, perhaps they used the word Mass in this case when it really wasn’t, but that’s not prudent or appropriate in my opinion, nor should the phrase, “The Mass is ended.” be used in any other liturgy/service.
