I am helping a friend make a Mass booklet for use at her brother’s burial Mass. Is this called just a Funeral Mass or at some time I thought I have heard of it as The Rite of Christian Burial. Also does anyone know where I can find a format for this booklet - I have the verses she wants Thanks for any help. sharon 😉

Hello

It depends whether you are a Catholic or not. Some people just have a service, with certain things omitted, some people have the full requiem mass. Some people have the body taken to church the previous evening and a requiem mass follow next day.

A service I think omits the communion not 100% sure on this one.

God Bless
Saint Andrew.

He lives in a home for the elderly that is run by the Little Sisters of the Poor. He will be buried from their chapel and he was baptized Catholic a few weeks ago. The sister who asked me to do this is also a convert - I went to Catholic Shools for 16 years but that was a long time ago and it seems somethings change - I know they still have the blessing with the paule??sp./?? draped over the coffin before the Mass and I know there is usually a rosary the night before and if any eulogizing is done it is done at this time - NOT at the Mass. I just don’t know what to put on the title of the pamphlet I am preparing FUNERAL MASS MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL OR SOMETHING ELSE - THANKS. 👍

God bless you. It is a work of mercy you do in the name of Christ.

There is a useful and accurate presentation of the various parts of the Order of Christian Funeral at duggans-serra.com/plan.shtml.

Then click to download funeral planning booklet. There will be a useable outline for you. You might also view archdiocesesantafe.org/Offices/Worship/Institute/Funerals.html which explains the three parts of Christian funeral

While many Catholics recall a recitation of the Rosary the evening before the funeral, the Order of Christian Funeral does call for the Vigil for the Deceased. The Vigil is rich in prayer and scripture. There is nothing to prevent a Rosary, the devotional prayer par excellence, at its conclusion. It a case in which the Church has treasures new and old to assist us in commending the departed to the care of God.

A white pall, symbolic of Christian baptism, is placed on the casket as part of the introductory rites of funeral, and not in advance.

The General Instruction of the Roman Missal calls it "Funeral Mass, " but titling a participation aid is pretty much at your discretion. There is nothing prescribed in the laws or rubrics about that.

(But if I had to select between Mass of Christian Funeral and Mass of Christian Burial — one of your possibilities— I would select the former, since the second refers to what happens after the Mass and after the Rite of Committal.)

A Requiem Mass need not be an actual funeral mass. It is a Mass for the Dead celebrated in honor of the deceased. Many were celebrated after the death of Pope John Paul II. To avoid this ambiguity, you may want to refrain from using it as title.

Don’t worry though. Do your best. If you can’t down load from those links, post tomorrow morning, and I’ll post the outline from my personal notes.

The best title for the booklet would be the “Rite of Christian Burial” Since it will contain more than just a funeral Mass.

Almost every funeral I’ve ever been to has had a Eulogy. Priest, family members, friends etc.
