Funeral Mass

Went to a funeral Mass a few days ago and something looked strange. The deceased was not catholic but the rest of the family was so they gave him a funeral Mass. The deceased preacher (protestant) read the Gospel reading and did the homily. Is there any provision for this at a Catholic Mass.

sorry about that. The deceased persons preacher from their church read the Gospel and did the homily

I think there was only one deceased preacher in history who gave a homily. 😃

No, to my knowledge, there is no assigned role that permits for the active participation by the deceased in the liturgy. 😉
 
Only a Catholic priest or deacon may read the Gospel or give the homily.
 
DSJJ, was this a Mass? What I mean by this is, was the Liturgy of the Eucharist (Communion) celebrated?

A Catholic funeral for a non-Catholic is only supposed to happen if the person’s pastor is not available.

For exceptional and just reasons, the bishop may give permission for a non-Catholic to do a reading at a Catholic Mass. Based on how often I have seen it happen, even when the Bishop is the celebrant, it would appear that many have just given the Pastors the leeway to approve this for weddings and funerals. That said, never is this to be the Gospel and the Homily which may only be read/given by a priest or deacon.

Catholic priests have even said that out of respect for the deceased, even if the entire family is Catholic and the deceased isn’t, the proper thing to do is to have the funeral according to their religion, or there lack of. What if this was a Catholic and the entire family were something else?

AND the bishop has to give permission:

Canon 1183 §3. In the prudent judgment of the local ordinary, ecclesiastical funerals can be granted to baptized persons who are enrolled in a non-Catholic Church or ecclesial community unless their intention is evidently to the contrary and provided that their own minister is not available.
