Tragedy
On the night of March 31 and April 1, Fr K J Thomas, Rector of Pontifical Seminary, Bangalore was brutally murdered. As the postmortem report indicated, he was killed violently with wounds on his face, forehead, head, chest and back. He was found murdered on the steps in front of the staff tea room and his body was dragged to staff tea room, just about 50 feet away from his room. It has been 18 days since his death and the police still have no found any suspects. I pray there may be justice for this humble Knanaya priest.
Funeral Services
Fr K J Thomas was buried in St Joseph Knanaya Church Cemetry, Ettumanoor in Kottayam district, Kerala on 5th April (Friday) 2013. Thousands of faithful – bishops, priests, nuns and laymen of various walks of life – were flowing to his house and to the home parish to pay last tribute to his body. Every one without exception was testifying to the statement that Fr K J (he was called so) was a saintly man.
The body was taken from the mortuary of Caritas hospital on Thursday evening and Mar Kuriakose Kunnacherry, the Archbishop Emeritus of Kottayam, prayed there the office of the dead for the bereaved soul remembering his holy and witnessing life. Major Archbishop Mar George Card. Alencherry, (the head of the Syro Malabar Church), Major Archbishop Mar Baselios Cleemis (Syro – Malankara), Mar Joseph Perumthottam Archbishop of Changanacherry, Mar Jacob Murikan the auxiliary bishop of Palai and Many others came to the house to pray for KJ.Chief Minister Sri. Oomman Chandy, Finance minister Sri. K M Mani, Jose K Mani MP, Suresh Kurup MLA and other political leaders were also present to pay their tribute.
Funeral service at home was begun at 2 pm and Mar Joseph Pandarasseril, auxiliary bishop of Kottayam, led the first part of the funeral service for the priest. Most Rev. Thomas Vazhappally bishop of Mysore, the professor and later coworker (a colleague) of Fr KJ Thomas made sermon there remembering his witnessing life in the diocese and the seminary. The body was solemnly brought to the church and the procession reached at St Joseph Knanaya Church by 3. 15 pm. The second part of the funeral service was led by Most. Rev. James Thoppil bishop of Kohima. Mar Mathew Moolakkatt the Metropolitan Archbishop of Kottayam was the main celebrant for the Holy Qurbana (Mass) for Fr KJ and His Grace himself officiated the third and fourth part of the funeral service. Bishop Jacob Mar Barnabas of Delhi also concelebrated along with other bishops and priests. Mar Joseph Pandarasseril remembered in the homily that Fr. K J Thomas was a well accepted and recognized priest in the seminary and in the diocese. This soft spoken and loving rector was a father to the seminarians and a brother to the staff. He stood for the betterment of the seminary and finally he shed his blood in the seminary. He was really a witness and as Christians we should pray for the conversion of the culprits and those who are behind this cruel act, which is really the Christian love. Let us pray that one day he may be venerated among the saints. The funeral service was over by 5.45 pm.
