Funeral Procedure-help?

:Hello everyone, I have a question concerning funeral procedure, here is the situation: My grandmother died in Montreal, she was cremated immediately and then we held a service over the ashes at a funeral parlour where prayers were said by a Catholic priest. Now, ashes are to be burried in Ontario. We want to have a church and burial service in ontario and i suppose my question is what type of service should we hold at this point, and who should perform it? I called a church in the area to book a funeral service and was told the priests would be away for the week but that a Deacon could perform the service, is this correct? Any opinions on what we should do from here would be appreciated. I should mention, she was Catholic.

The Deacon could lead a memorial service. But if I were you, and time was no problem, I would wait until the priest returned and have a funeral Mass offered with the ashes present.

she passed away april 5th we had the service the following saturday and ever since then there has been obstacles to get to ontario-do you time is an issue?

A Deacon can certainly preside over a funeral service. It will not, obviously, be a Mass; it will be more like a communion service. The cremains, however, do need to be present at the Church. If possible, a funeral Mass would be better. I have the rites somewhere in my room; it will take me a day to find them. Someone might have easier access, though.

I’m guessing that you were asking “What do you mean by if time is an issue?”
I was thinking about if you had some need to have the service quickly because of realtives coming from out of town.

It depends what is permitted by your Bishop or Bishops conference. Sometimes a full funeral Mass (priest is required) is possible with the cremated remains present in the church. A Deacon can lead the Rite of Christian Burial outside of Mass. Some diocese only allow a Memorial Mass if the body is not present.

It sounds as though no Mass was said in Montreal so a Mass would be best in Ontario, if possible a full funeral Mass if this is permitted after cremation. If not then a memorial Mass, with grave side prayers following. Waiting until the priests return would be reasonable.
