I am home, ill with the flu, and have to pick the readings for my Uncle Jerry’s funeral tomorrow. I need Old Testament, Psalm and something from St. Paul. I would like the theme to be around the great love one human being shows for another when they help them, serve the poor, etc…my Uncle was a farmer and held in very high esteem by the workers and other farming families because he never got rich - you can’t get rich when you are busy providing food, clothing, shelter and work to anyone who happens to knock at your door. He was a very good man.

Any help you all can give me would be very appreciated. He passed into eternal rest on Sunday. My entire family came down with the flu by Monday and I am still feeling a bit woozy…I want to avoid going to the parish office in case I am still a “Flu Bug Carrier”.

Thank you! I will check back this afternoon.

Part III of the Rite of Christian Funerals gives you the list of Scripture readings and Gospels that you are limited to chose from. For Adults there are 6 OT, 19 NT, 10 Psalms, and 19 Gospels that you have to chose from.

I suggest:
First reading: Wisdom 3:1-9 (Lectionary, volume 3, Masses for the Dead, first reading from the Old Testament, no. 2).
Psalm: 114:5-6; 115:10-11. 15-16. Response: Ps 114:9 (with the first reading in the lectionary).
Second reading: Romans 8:31-35.37-39. (Second reading from the New Testament, no. 5).
Gospel reading: Matthew 5:1-12 (Gospel reading, no. 1).

A site with the readings is stbrendanchurch.org/lectionary/funeral/index.html .
