I went to a conference last weekend. Before the first talk, I took out my old notebook to start a confession list. While leafing through the notebook, I found an old confession list.

I glanced through it, and thought, “yep, I can just use this list.”
I crossed off one thing that didn’t fit. And, I changed the frequency on a couple others.

sigh. My husband suggested that I just laminate it to save time in the future.

When will I ever progress!?!? I wonder if Jesus is as irritated with me as I am.

On of my favorite priests explained it this way: the path is like a spiral staircase. We come across the same issues again and again but (hopefully) from a little higher up each time. 😉

Not at all. I’ve told this story before, but I’ll repost it for you, because I find it helpful for myself, and I hope it will help you, too. 🙂

When my uncle was in the war, he had an experience very similar to what you are going through.

He was stuck up to his waist in a swamp, defending the same village from the same Japanese invaders, day after day after day. He was often tempted just to give up and let the Japanese take that village. But then he would look into the eyes of those little kids, and then he would go back into that swamp and fight again another day. Over and over and over again, week after week, month after month.

Soldiers were dying all around him. He wondered what it was all for.

Then suddenly one day, the Japanese were just gone. Day after day, they looked, and there were no Japanese any more. Eventually, someone came and told them that the war was over; the Japanese had surrendered.

So they went back to the village, and told the villagers the good news - the Japanese were gone, and were not coming back. Then, with very little fanfare, they went home. Nobody asked them where they had been, or what they had been doing. Everyone at home was talking about great battles, exciting moments in the war. Nobody really cared about a bunch of men who had spent the entire war standing in the same swamp, fighting the same battle over and over again.

Nobody, of course, except for those villagers. He still hears from the children, sometimes - they’re grown now, and they write to him, sometimes. They remember him, and they’re still grateful that he didn’t leave them to the “mercies” of the Japanese. They’re glad they got the chance to go to school, to go into business, to get married, and to have families of their own. All because he kept fighting the same battle over and over and over again, without giving up.

So, when you go into the Confessional with the same list yet again, remember my uncle, up to his waist in a swamp, fighting that same battle, over again. And know that Jesus understands that sometimes, to win the battle, you just have to stay put and keep fighting, regardless of outward appearances.

What a great story!!!

Quoting Leonie:

I had a giggle at that, but the giggle was on me!..

Blessings this Holy Week…Barb

We measure progress in our way and God measures it in His.

I will give you a little gem that St Josemaria wrote to one of his sons when the son was feeling exactly the same way.

The Way > Holy Mass > Number 534 http://www.escrivaworks.org/images/misc/pixtrans.gif http://www.escrivaworks.org/images/misc/pixtrans.gif 534 http://www.escrivaworks.org/images/misc/pixtrans.gif Going to Communion every day for so many years! Anybody else would be a saint by now, you told me, and I… I’m always the same!

Son, I replied, keep up your daily Communion, and think: what would I be if I had not gone?

At least you don’t have any NEW sins.

Someone once asked an old monk, “What do you do all day in your monastery?”

“We fall down, and we get up, and we fall down, and we get up, and we fall down…and eventually pick ourselves up on the other side of the threshold to heaven.”

Maybe I should go back and work on my plan to work on my root sin–sensuality (a concern for my own comfort).

Funny, though, it seems like too much work–

I guess I could start with sloth. 😃

Aw, hang in there. :hug1: I can’t tell you how many times I have had this same thought. Each night, when I kneel down to pray… part of my prayers is to ask Jesus to “forgive me for all in which I continually offend You, dear Lord”. And I’ve been certain that my Confessor is one day, going to peek through the screen and bop me on the head for confessing the same sins, over and over.

It is very discouraging at times. But it is so important to never give up. I once heard Mother Angelica (of EWTN) say… “A saint is someone who keeps on trying”. I liked the analogy of the spiral staircase, too. That’s a good one. I hadn’t heard it before.

God bless you, this Holy Week and Easter.:bible1:

Everytime you do something (or not do) on your list, pay hubby or kids a casino chip. At the end of the day or week, they can cash in the chip for, say, a treat, do a chore for them, a date with hubby 😉 , etc.

For lent, I had planned to fast from making any negative remarks. I was going to have my family fine me everytime I slipped up. I didn’t do it because I figured I’d run out of money after the first few days.

Seriously, I do think we have to take our faults and give ourselves penances for failures, the way a teacher assigns us to write the words we spelled wrong ten times each. I know we are expected to make a sincere effort to improve. I think about that scene in Nun’s Story where they make the nuns kiss the feet of all the other nuns before eating, just for talking during the silence. Boy, they knew how to do it right in the old days.

I think you’ve hit the key. Mortification is my missing ingredient. I’ve decided to focus on one particular sin that I’ve struggled with for years and work on that until I’ve eliminated it from my life. I’ll have to ask the Holy Spirit for some advice for mortification.

Then, I’ll work on another sin.

Of course, all the time doing my best to avoid all sin.

I was wondering how often you go to confession- if you go every other week maybe youll start to be more thoughtful about your behavior…I know there are times I said to myself I dont want to have to go to the priest and keep saying the same things over and over so I wont do that. Also leonie a headon assault on leonies sins by leonie will get you no where- We need God. Some of my wors shortcomeings have been my biggest strengths becuas I need the Lord so much. I get all my strength from him. If a task seems to hard pray for WILLINGNESS to change.
And lastly it is a journey not a destination!!!

Good point. I go monthly. I should definitely step it up. And, I’m not in the habit of a nightly examination of conscience. I should start that, too.

I should. Why am I so lazy?!?!? I’ll try. 🙂

Daily Mass wouldn’t hurt, either. Or, at least several times a week. I’ve noticed a difference in the negative since I haven’t been going. So has my family.

Leonie,
I am lazy too maybe we should start with laziness first!!!

I’m up for it! Do you want to be accountability partner?

Here’s my first goal:
  1. I’m going to get up at 6 am tomorrow and take two of my kids to Mass at 7:30.
Would you pm tomorrow (Tuesday) and see if I did it? 🙂

What your goal?

Okay leonie,
I am up for it. My goal is to have my kitchen clean when I go to bed tonight so I dont have to wake up to the mess. That way I dont spend my day cleaning my kitchen and neglecting everything else that needs to be done.Kids all have the cruds so might have to pass on mass but sounds like a good idea for me too.
I will try to PM you though I have never done it, I am sure it is not complicated.

Oh now, I have to change my goal because we have co-op in the morning (I forgot :o ). I like your goal. I’ll do my kitchen, too! It’d be nice to wake up to a clean kitchen. 🙂

just click my name to send me a pm. 🙂
