Not a hymn, but from the Divine Praises:

“Blessed be the Holy Ghost, the Parakeet” (Paraclete)
Needless to say, I (thought I) understood why the Holy Ghost was always portrayed as a bird.

I’ve also thought about setting all the cactus free. In fact, whenever I hear that song, I still sometimes get a mental image of a group of saguaros running across the desert with their “arms” in the air.

Maybe the ‘cactus rights’ people will start setting the cactus captives free?😃

The results of a protestant upbringing:

Thy pound through out the universe is played (How Great Thou Art)

From Battle Hymn of the Republic
He is sorting out the hounds of men before his judgment seat
and
As you deal with my contenders so my grace with thee shall deal

For those unfamiliar with these songs the lines should be:

Thy Power through out the universe displayed

He is sorting out the hearts of men before his judgment seat.

As you deal with my contemners so my grace with thee shall deal

Good grief! They’ll come after little brother and me for sure because we find those “free range cactus” especially tasty with chorizo and eggs! 👍

Okay, this isn’t a hymn, but back in the “happy clappy '70s” our choir did sing this as the closing hymn almost every Sunday:

“If I Had a Hammer”

Only the first time I heard it (I was probably 6 years old at the time) I either had very clogged ears from an infection or the choir was not singing clearly, but I didn’t hear the word “hammer”… I heard the words “have her”:

“If I hadda have her,
I’d have her in the morning,
I’d have her in the evening,
all over this land…”

and as it went on it made even less sense.

Same here!! I even asked a Priest about it and he laughed until he cried.:rotfl:

one of the teens in confirmation class is convinced we pray to the Holy Spirit, the Controller (consoler)

I was sitting behind an older couple at Mass and the priest said something refering to one of our permenant deacons, “Deacon Tom”.

The gentleman turned to his wife with a puzzled look on his face and asked what was being said about “a Peepin Tom”.

This was years ago and I can’t get out of my head every time I hear his name mentioned.

I’ve heard the line in “The Angel Gabriel from Heaven Came” change from:

Most highly favoured lady
to
Most highly flavoured lady 😛

I’ve also heard the words of “Bread of Life” get mixed up to go from:

Feed us now, give us life, lead us to one another
to
Lead us now, give us life, feed us to one another

For the record, I like the first hymn much better than the second, even when it’s mixed up.
😃 😃
That was funny 🙂

I have a number of misheard hymns, but unfortunately they’re in Danish, so it’d loose everything in the translation 😦

Enjoying this thread 🙂

I know someone who says she “learned” the Our Father when she was a young girl as “…and lead a snot into temptation…” (which sort of explained in her mind why several boys she knew were always getting into trouble).

From “Hark the Herald Angels Sing”:
"Peace on earth and mercy mild . . ."

When I was a kid, I thought it said, "He’s on earth and makin’ it wild . . ."

In my family, we intentionally mis-hear hymns. So, in the third verse of “Go To Dark Gethsemane,” where it says, “Mark that miracle of time,/God’s own sacrifice complete,” one family member (whose name just happens to be Mark) simply inserts a comma: “Mark, that miracle of time…” 😃

How about “Angels we have heard get high”/// omg…I finally reached 400 posts…is there there a record for fewest amount of posts in the longest amount of time?

These are just hilarious…

I managed to mangle the Our Father pretty good when I was little:

“Our Father, who aren’t in Heaven…”

My poor mother was horrified.

And along the lines of “Thanks, peedygod,” my nightly prayers went:
“Uh-fye-shuh-dyebee for I wake…”

I remember very clearly asking my grandfather how to spell “uhfyeshuhdyebee” once. He was baffled.

*Stella 👍
