I just had to share a true story about this:

Friend has eight baby and gets asked the typical questions… I don’t need to list them. Well, his response to his male friends who commented was:

You know, my wife is very beautiful and I really love showing her how much I love her! I love having children with her because they are a part of her and I see her in them. But I can see why you wouldn’t want to have any more kids…

That sounds like a terrible put-down. Maybe your friend could simply stop after telling how much he loves his wife and not make comments that sound as though the other person’s wife is not as nice looking. Personally, I don’t see anything funny about it.

Maybe change it to "I can see why *your wife *wouldn’t want to have any more. 👍

I feel so badly for the comments people make to parents of large families! The other day in Church, we saw a women with several children - I asked, “Are those all yours?”
I could tell she almost didn’t want to answer. “Yes,” she said, “And there are four more at home.”
When I told her she was so lucky, and had a wonderful family, she looked like she wanted to hug me. “Thank you so much,” she said. “You wouldn’t believe the things people say to us for having eight children.”
I told her how Dh and I wanted at least that many. Poor mom, thinking she was going to get berated!! And in a Catholic Church, too … I wish more people would follow her example. What lucky kids she has.

If the two guys are buddies, then yes, this would be a reasonable closing line. No worse than the ribbing my husband and his male friends give each other on a regular basis.

Of course, :tiphat:

You know, last week a lady in Mass stopped and told me that I had a beautiful children. It was such an encouragement. I definitely will look for an opportunity to compliment a parent on her kids in the near future.

I say: I’m doing my part to fund your social security, what are you doing?

My close friend’s from a family of 9. The age difference between the eldest and youngest child is 18 yrs. When my friend was 17, she was walking in the shops with her youngest sister. She kept telling me that the shoppers kept giving her dirty looks. and at one point she got asked whether her sister was hers.
another family i know has 13 kids plus they adopted one more.
I think its sooo amazing to have a big family, honestly, im quite jealous since i only have 3 first cousins in total and 2 other siblings. I would love to have a really big family.

I hate that attitude. People assume ayoung parent is irresponsible, a bad kid and a bad parent. How would they know? Even if the sisters were mother and child, there would be nothing wrong with it. Since the total gap was 18 years and your friend was 17, the youngest wasn’t there yet, so the little sister was the next youngest, so a one-year-old with a 17-year old – that’s 16 years apart. I know very loving mothers who had their children at 16 or even younger. Sure it’s best to wait, but that doesn’t give anyone a right to assume bad thigns about young families either. It’s not physically healthy or easy to have kids early, but it’s not healthy or eay to have them late either and people seem to be OK with parents waiting until they’re 49 or 50 or later and doing IVF.

I only have three (all boys) and I STILL get comments. Once I took all three to the swimming club and as I was checking in, the lady said, “Boy, mom has her hands full, doesn’t she?” Then she spotted my youngest with his hat off and said, “Oh, all BOYS? Wow, you REALLY have your hands full.”

Why do people assume that boys are more trouble than girls to raise, or pity me because I have all boys? My female soul is not troubled, trust me, because I have sons.

Then, of course, I get the “you need to try for a girl” comments. Which irritate me, especially when they’re said in front of my very loved, very much wanted boys.

When i was pregnant with #3, I often got, “Oh, what are you having?” and when i would say, “A healthy boy,” people would say, “Oh…were you trying for a girl?” (actually they would ask that even without asking the gender of my baby!)

Finally, at the bank one day, I snapped. The lady saw my two boys and me at 8 months pregnant and just asked point blank, “Were you trying for a girl or something?”

I said, “Gosh, no, this time I was trying for a hedgehog, but would you believe the stupid DNA doesn’t combine that way?!”

Some of the funny responses I’ve used are as follows:

“I don’t see what you’re complaining about. MY kids will be paying YOUR Social Security.”

When asked if we’ve figured out what causes that so called problem, “Well, we have a pretty strong suspicion, but we’re thinking of trying it again to make sure.”

“Just doing my part to populate the world with Christians.”

“I’m doing my part to show I’m pro-life.”

“Why no, I don’t know what causes babies. Please tell me.”

“Yes, we have five kids. We’re trying for our own baseball team. Halfway there!”

There’s any number of things you could say that are funny without putting down the other person. No need to let them drag me to their level.

o yeah…
soz, i had to make you do all the math there…
yeah, it was the second oldest who is my friend. so yep, it was she who was walking through the shops and got asked.
actually the lady said - ‘hello, thats not your child rite?’ in a really cold tone.
and then my friend answered, ‘ummm…no…its my little sister.’
then the lady became all nice and chummy just because it was my friend’s sister.

This is rather funny to me, because it really doesn’t matter what your situation is. Someone will always say that your decisions were defective.

The choice to have or not have children is very personal. It is not really any else’s business.

Every couple will have their own reasons for their parenting decisions. And they owe no one else an explanation.

When I encounter rude and nosey people, they are owed nothing.
My preference is to blow them off. Give them a wisecrack, and directions to the exit. They deserve no more than that.

we have ten kids and we’ve answered them all.

once, a person said, right in front of our kids (!!!) “oh, that’s just too many.” to which my girl (then 7) responded, “which one of us shouldn’t be here?”

just recently, i had an opprtunity to make one of my favorite responses. someone asked me if my husband had considered getting ‘fixed’ to which i responded, “oh, i assure you. nothing of his is broken.”

the rudest is, as i’d mentioned, when someone makes a comment in front of my children. usually if my kids are listening, I will say, “they all come out so cute (or sweet, or happy, or pleasant etc) how could we stop?” i say it much more for my children’s sake than the comedian who’s forcing the issue. nevertheless, that response usually shuts people up.

the dopiest aspect of all the comments-- every person who makes one thinks his is uniquely funny. yet they are neither unique nor funny.

I’ve got a couple of friends I’m going to pass these on to…

Thanks,

I liked the first comment on here, besides the putting down of the other guy’s wife. - The comment about his own wife being beautiful and stuff was neat; something that I might say someday, if I get married and have several kids.

And some of the other comments are pretty funny and creative!

It’s funny how people comment on how many kids you have regardless of if you have none or a bunch.

My grandmother just got after me…she thought my heart condition prevented me from having kids, when she found out that was not the case she basically said “Get to it”.

I think how many kids you have is totally up to each family. As long as you can support all of them and take care of them…have as many or as few as you like.

The people bug me are the ones who can’t support financially themselves as a couple and still choose to have a ton of kids…going “God will provide”. My answer is he did…he gave you a brain and self control. My mom had a resident manager, who worked for our family company who was like this. His job for my mom was part time and the wife stayed home. We could never figure out how they were making ends meet. They had 9 kids, turns out his wife had been taking petty cash grocery shopping to support the family. They were shocked when they were fired and brought up on charges for embezzelment, the wife said that they must have displeased God since he wasn’t providing.

If you can responsibly care and provide for 9 kids…knock yourself out. If not, use the brain God “provided” you with to find a legal way to or use the self control God “provided” you with to not get pregnant.

This is a response to a contestant allegedly uttered by the great Groucho Marx on the old game show, You Bet Your Life. It was, some say, cut by the censors in the old days.

Groucho was making clever small talk with his guests (which was the whole point of the show) before the quiz. One guest was a woman who had eight kids. When she mentioned this to Groucho, he apparently replied:

Groucho: Eight children. Well. that’s a great burden and a great responsibility.

Woman: Yes Groucho it is, but I love my husband a lot.

Groucho: Well. I love my cigar but I take it out of my mouth sometimes.

The audience broke up laughing at this zinger.
(Hurray for Captain Spalding!)
