So, this Saturday I was at another horse show - hanging out at the in-gate with my horse waiting for my next class. My buddy strolls up, happily munching on a big chunk of pepperoni pizza.
“Hey! Where’s mine??” I said… Michelle spins on her heel and walks away in the direction of the Snack Shack and brings me back a fresh piece of pizza. “Friendship preserved again”, I thought as I wolfed down Mr. Pizza.
So, after my last riding class of the day, I looked at my watch. “I can make it to confession at St Michael’s if I put up my horse now, and then go to Mass”. So I take off.
I get to St. Michaels right on time. I love to go to this church. The priest is a lovely man, and a gifted confessor. I go to him specifically for face-to-face penance when I have something I really want to talk about.
The pastor was his usual warm and engaging self. He makes nice eye contact if your eyes seek it - but if he is sensitive to your shame and won’t stare you down when you are hurting. Very kind man. I could see him look at me with warmth, but seemed a bit puzzeled at me this time - but despenced his usually kind loving advice and peace to me. And then I left to go to the chapel to await Mass.
I had only visited this church a couple of times. Small church, so the people notice someone different. I could sense them looking at me once in awhile in curiousity - just like Fr. did in confession. Maybe a bit TOO curiously.
Father delivers a lovely homily and a most holy mass is celebrated. I leave feeling especially graced by this nice church and holy priest. “They sure like to check you over though”, I thought, “Must not be used to strangers showing up”
I make my way back to my pick-up to head back to the horse show. Jump into the drivers seat and flip down the vanity mirror to check my make up. AND TO MY HORROR discovered a big red streak of PIZZA SAUCE ACROSS MY FACE!!!
I had gone through my last horse show class of the day, through face-to-face confession, and mass - WITH a 1/4 cup of PIZZA sauce smeared across my cheek!
I’m still trying to figure out why the priest didn’t tell me, and what the Lord is trying to teach me. Maybe just to laugh at myself.
