So I just went to confession. In the past my primary sins have been sins against chastity, including today. Yet today the priest asked me that the next time I go to confession at least 50% of sins other than those of unchastity, that it’s time to start developing my conscience in other things. On this I agree with him. I am seeing more and more clearly, especially since this confession, that in continuing to confess primarily sins of unchastity that my spiritual life has been more or less stagnant, and whatever progress has been made, in actual fact is quite minimal.

I already have some ideas about how this is to be done, but I would like to hear some ideas about what could help me to start making more progress. Also please pray for me in this respect.

What a great challenge for you to take on! I have seen this guide be posted by other members on CAF, and I think it is great. Every month there is a difference theme to focus on when doing your examination of conscience. I would not recommend JUST confessing these themes per month, but it could be a nice way for you to start examining other parts of your conscience. I will pray for you! materdeiparish.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Examination-of-Conscience-for-Adults.pdf

Thank you for that resource and your prayers. I am reading through it now, and am praying if it’s the right resource for me at this time. At the very least it’s something to get me thinking.

Great! I also use the Laudate app on my phone. It has so many great features. One of which is an examination of conscience where you click on things you have been successful at. Then it will give you a “script” of what you can ask the priest for forgiveness for.

I look for ways to examine my conscience as I seem to get in a rut, too! There are lots of good resources out there regarding examination of conscience. Visit your local Catholic bookstore, if you have one or if not, go shopping online. I just picked up a book on the beatitudes with the angle of using it in examining my conscience. Don’t forget prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to awaken your conscience and guide you in confessing not only active sins but failing in sins of omission, as in not practicing the beatitudes in our daily lives. By far, we generally commit more sins of omission, falling short of what Christ asks us to do. God bless you in your search.
