This one is so retro that even the “Glory and Praise” bands from the 1980’s were complaining about it. 😛
 
C’mon, we all know that St. Augustine said that when we sing we pray twice. Don’t you love praying twice!!! When I hear this stuff I often pray twice - once for someone to shoot the “choir” and once for forgiveness for wanting to shoot the “choir”…😃

Yes, I think I said 4 or 5 Acts of Contrition yesterday during Mass. We didn’t have that Amen but the creed was sung – 2 sentences --, the Sanctus was the responsorial one that goes

I went to the evening Mass at a diocese’s cathedral yesterday since DH & I were travelling and I was cringing through out the entire Mass. The music was very similar to the OPs description and I could hardly stand it. But even before that, this bugged me to no end…during the procession they were basically running up the center aisle and then what do I see but one of the lady readers carrying the Gospel…I thought well, I know that can be allowed but then who followed but the DEACON!!! :eek: :eek: :eek: Now, shouldn’t he have been carrying the Gospel since he was present? And a final note that just got under my skin was that the priest acted like this was a big production and not the Holy Mass (and mind you, I try not to criticize priests)!!! I love traveling with DH and going to different parishes but when you get one like we got yesterday I wish I had just stayed home and gone to my parish!!!

When I was in choir a few years ago that was introduced by our choir director, along with hand movements which she insisted the choir members do and which I would not do. So while everyone else in the choir was waving their arms around like cheerleaders I just stood there singing. And that is exactly what that reminds me of doing a cheer. The choir director taught the whole thing to the parishioners. It looks pretty weird to see an entire church waving their arms around and singing this, especially when you are thinking to yourself that this is a mockery of a soleum moment. I like putting some pep in the music, but there is a time and place for everything.

Do you say that deaf people using sign language are doing “cheers”? That’s pretty derogatory. The common hand sign to the Alleluia is actually the sign language sign for “Alleluia”. There is no problem with everyone doing one movement such as sign language with music.

Are the gestures actually ASL? If not then are simply gestures for the sake of gestures.

I had to sing this one when I was in the choir at my previous parish. I always hated it, but fortunately it was only seasonal. Now, however, I think I had it easy with that song. My new parish doesn’t sing that allejuah, but they do have electric guitars, an electric bass, drums, and bongos. :rolleyes: I really made an effort not to join the choir on that basis, but it’s where I need to be. I just don’t feel right sitting in the congregation. So there I am, every Sunday, in my suit, dealing with this. Oh, and did I mention that they cross aisles to hold hands when they sing the Our Father? Yeah, I got plenty to offer up.

The main Mass at the parish this weekend (well the only Mass on Sunday) was a ‘teaching’ mass for the 15 kids who are making their First Communion next weekend. This was the kids choir – too bad the leader thinks that’s all they are capable of singing.

I don’t know what’s worse, that one or the Alleluia that sounds like the “Macarena.” http://bestsmileys.com/puking/1.gif At my former parish church, we were doing all of that dreck, rotating one piece o’ crapulence for the next with the turning of the liturgical seasons. I can’t tell you how blessed I feel that one of the local parishes started offering TLM each Sunday. While my former choir-mates were singing that stuff, I was across town singing “Ave Maris Stella” and the “Breastplate of St. Patrick.” I only wish that all of you had easy access to TLM such as we do here. :heaven: :love: :heaven:

Thats fine. You can like it. But remember the difference between the traditional music (ie: mozart etc.) and that “praise music” is the fact that Traditional music will be here in 30 years. If things play out you may be forced yourself to listen to the “flavor” of the day…perhaps it will be seatle grunge music or hip hop.

That is the problem with “praise” music…it follows secular contemporary lines and evolves …and over time Generation gaps start to rear their ugly heads.

And if they are ASL then it’s still a meaningless gesture unless they’re signing the entire Mass.
 
Little music story…

Last Sunday I missed morning Mass, so I had to go to the Cathredral for 530 Mass. Everything seemed ok, besides of course the oval seating where I have to look at someone else from across the room unless I look sideways at the priest the entire time…anyway got off topic there.

Well, it came time for the Gloria. The priest, to my suprise and excitement said “Gloria in excleise Deo” (i know the spelling is wrong…go ahead and correct me)…I was so excited that he said it in latin…but common, someday I will learn don’t get excited about Mass being “catholic” cause that will only last a second. He said that and the singing started, in english, which ok, I was hoping for Latin but what ever…then the crazy lady singing with her guitar STOPS and claps some beat and made a motion for us to do this thing too. Well, i do have to say there were probably 400 people there and only 10 actually clapped (I can say ten, cause we are in a half circle, just in case I need to remind you)…hopefully since people didn’t do it, she will let it go, or the oppsite and try even harder and people will just ‘follow the leader’

It really bothers me how we can only find extremes in our parishes.

Either everyone is living in a previous century or they are clapping and dancing in their sports clothes.

What about those who don’t care for a traditional re-enactment or for a college christian rock camp?

Is there no reprieve? Must I either suffer for not wearing a long enough veil or be tortured by a muppet talking to me at the pulpit? Do I have to choose between scorn over not looking amish enough and gasps when I genuflect before going into the pew?

Aaaaah! :eek:
