I ask particularly about modesty and immodesty in this passage

Galatians 5 :16-25
16] I say then, walk in the spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lusts of the flesh. [17] For the flesh lusteth against the spirit: and the spirit against the flesh; for these are contrary one to another: so that you do not the things that you would. [18] But if you are led by the spirit, you are not under the law. [19] Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are fornication, uncleanness, immodesty, luxury, [20] Idolatry, witchcrafts, enmities, contentions, emulations, wraths, quarrels, dissensions, sects,

[21] Envies, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like. Of the which I foretell you, as I have foretold to you, that they who do such things shall not obtain the kingdom of God. [22] But the fruit of the Spirit is, charity, joy, peace, patience, benignity, goodness, longanimity, [23] Mildness, faith, modesty, continency, chastity. Against such there is no law. [24] And they that are Christ’ s, have crucified their flesh, with the vices and concupiscences. [25] If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Is modesty and immodesty cited here pertaining to modesty in women’s clothing particularly or something else?

Thank you very much!

Interesting that ‘luxury’ is included in that verse…hmmm?

Galatians 5 is popular today.

Here are 5 different translations of those verses including the Douay-Rheims with you quoted:
biblegateway.com/passage/?search=galatians%205%3A16-25&version=NIV;NABRE;DRA;AKJV;RSVCE

comparing just those five, the comparable words would be:
sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery;
immorality, impurity, licentiousness,
fornication, uncleanness, immodesty
Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
immorality, impurity, licentiousness,
This is a simplistic way to approach it but, as I understand it, it boils down to any kind of illicit sexual behavior that the reader can think of, so probably it refers to appearance or behavior that is lewd rather than appearance or behavior that is ostentatious or vain.

I would say go to the Greek on this because “luxury” has some archaic meanings which include lechery, lust, and indulgence.

Oops, I forgot to be specific in the title. What I mean is Galatians 5:19 , Galatians 5:23 interpretation. Concerning immodesty and modesty in bold text.

Does this immodesty / modesty concerning woman’s clothing?

I quote the passage from Douay Rheims Bible

Thanks

Immodesty is not a priori about covering the skin; it is a manner of behavior.

One can be immodest in a Victorian granny dress, or suit and tie; and one can be modest in shorts and a Tshirt.

IMNAAHO.

Yes, we went over that particular word, “luxury” in Gal 5:19, in another thread, and it is an archaic English usage of the work luxury. The Greek word, ἀσέλγεια (aselgeia) is more often translated as debauchery, licentiousness, lasciviousness, or words to that effect.

(But this is a side topic, not exactly what the OP was asking.)

I tried: it doesn’t work. Whatever that part of the DRB was translated from, it wasn’t a standard GNT form, or the Vulgate, or the one version of the Vetus Latina which I could find (Cyprian’s).

For the OP, I would recommend reading Tertullian on modesty, or just going with GEddie’s comment: modesty is behaviour, and can thus affect dress, but is not limited to that (or to women’s clothing, either).

Mystophilus, you idiot, it’s from the Clementine Vulgate!

impudicitia - unchasteness, immodesty, lewdness, shamelessness

modestia - unassuming conduct, discretion, moderation, sobriety

Still, Tertullian is the one: he talks all about both of those.

Lol 🙂 Thanks for the Tertullian heads up.

I was somewhat frustrated with myself, having gone through a long and complicated process of ascertaining that it did not fit either the Greek or the (current) Vulgate, and even going to the extent of tracking down a pre-Vulgate version of the Latin, before finally just looking at the Clementine. Next time, I will try to remember to start there.
