I was reading his document of recantation. And I struggle with that and the fact that the Pope and the Cardnals and all of Catholicism was wrong on that one. Yet we should trust the Church teaching of the deposit. It seems that the Church was arrogant with Galileo in spite of his evidence. And it was only long after his death that the church appologized. There is a real issue there for me.

What exactly is the “real issue” for you? What do you struggle with? And in what authoritative sense does this involve “the Church”?

No dogma was ever defined during these tribunals, so no teaching error ever occurred as a threat to infallibility. If you do not struggle with Christ hand picking Judas, or Peter specifically behaving as a hypocrite in Galatians 2, or any other Christian caught in sin, then why would you have problems with a Pope treating Gallileo not as well as he should have? See? 🙂

I suppose you can say you have a problem with a Church figure behaving badly, and that is a fair point. But in the context of which I understand you to say it, you have a problem with the Catholic faith as a result when the faith has always been preserved.

sambos, like millions before you, your faith is being tested by the Devil himself. Your Catholic instincts are telling you something is very wrong here. This is not supposed to happen, a heretic vindicated and the devinely guided Church WRONG.

Well let me try to save your faith. The Church was not wrong, then on now or ever will be. The Church does not define and declare a heresy that turns out NOT to be a heresy. The answer lies in your belief that the sun stands still and the earth moves. You will die to protect this belief. But there is no way man can know this. He can say he knows, he can tell us he knows, but he cannot know this. Only God knows and the Church is His mouthpiece. The Church was never wrong. Believe.

“First, the truth of Scripture must be held inviolable. Secondly, when there are different ways of explaining Scriptural text, no particular explanation should be held so rigidly that, if convincing arguments show it to be false, anyone dare to insist that it still is the definitive sense of the text. Otherwise, unbelievers will scorn the Sacred Scripture, and the way of faith will be closed to them.”

Willy Jose: Why is it that if you place a website up on your post, THAT IS THE TRUTH OF IT?

I opened up that site and the FIRST thing I came to was

Contrary to the misconceptions of critics,
  • the Roman Inquisition did not charge Galileo with heresy - it censured him with violating the 1616 injunction against supporting the then dubious Copernican theory. Big difference there.

Galileo’s Abjuration

“I, Galileo Galilei, son of the late Vincenzio Galilei of Florence, aged seventy years, appearing personally before this court, and kneeing before you, the most eminent and reverend Lord Cardinals, Inquisitors-General of *the universal Christian Republic against heretical pravity*, having before my eyes the most holy Gospels, and touching them with my hands, swear that I always have believed, and now believe, and with God’s help will always believe, all that the Holy Catholic and Apostolic Roman Church holds, preaches, and teaches. But because, after this Holy Office had juridically enjoined me to abandon altogether the false opinion which holds that the sun is in the centre of the world, and immovable, and that the earth is not the centre, and moves; and had forbidden me to hold, defend, or teach in any manner, the said false doctrine; and after it had been notified to me that the said doctrine is repugnant to Holy Scripture, I wrote and caused to be printed a book, wherein I treat of the same doctrine already condemned, and adduced arguments with great efficacy in favour of it, without offering any solution of them; therefore I am judged vehemently suspected of HERESY, that is, of having held and believed that the sun is the centre of the world and immovable, and that the earth is not the centre, and moves. Wherefore, desiring to remove from the minds of your Eminences, and all Catholic Christians, this vehement suspicion legitimately conceived against me, with a sincere heart and faith unfeigned, I abjure, curse, and detest, the above named errors, and HERESIES, and generally every other error and sect contrary to the above-mentioned Holy Church; and I swear for the future, I will neither say, nor assert by word of mouth, or in writing, anything to bring upon me similar suspicion. And if I shall know any HERTETIC, or one suspected of HERESY, I will denounce him to this Holy Office, or to the Inquisitor, or Ordinary of the place in which I may be. Moreover I swear, and promise, to fulfil, and observe entirely, all the penances that have been or shall be imposed on me by this Holy Office. And if -which God forbid- I act against any of these said promises, protestations, and oaths, I subject myself to all the penalties and punishments which the sacred canons, and other constitutions, general and particular, have enacted, and promulgated against such delinquents. So help me God, and His holy Gospels, which I touch with my hands.
I suggest all note that unless one reads the actual records of the 1633 trial one will be led to believe a PACK OF LIES WRITTEN ABOUT THE GALILEO CASE FOR 250 YEARS NOW.

Perhaps the problem lies in differences of understanding the meaning and application of the word “heresy”.

I’m not sure if the Church has an official definition of it, but it seems most people now (at least here on CAF) understand heresy as believing/proclaiming a position contrary to an **infallibly defined truth **proclaimed by the Catholic Church. Consider that at the time of Galileo the term no doubt had a broader application; that is, it also included teachings contrary to even those that were not infallibly defined. That would explain the use of the word “heresy” in his retraction.

Perhaps we are wrong in thinking it applies only to officially defined doctrines. Guess I’ll have to do a little more digging.

Where does one find in the deposit of faith that “the earth is the center of the world and does not move”?

For any who are interested, here is the definition of “heresy” given in Fr. John Hardon’s “Modern Catholic Dictionary”:

…
In the Roman Catholic Church, heresy has a very specific meaning. Anyone who, … pertinaciously denies or doubts **any of the truths that must be believed with divine and Catholic faith **is considered a heretic. Accordingly four elements must be verified to constitute formal heresy; previous valid baptism, which need not have been in the Catholic Church; extermal profession of still being a Christian, otherwise a person becomes an apostate; outright denial or positive doubt regarding a truth that the Catholic Church has actually proposed as revealed by God; and the disbelief must be morally culpable, where a nominal Christian refuses to accept what he knows is a doctrinal imperative. …

Hi Cassini,
Can you give me a link to an official source for the text of Galileo’s abjuration that you cite. I tried tracking it down on the Vatican website, but didn’t have much luck. What they did show were some original documents in Latin – which I’m no longer able to translate. :o

The Vatican websiite did include some interesting info. asv.vatican.va/en/doc/1616.htm

Googling turned up similar translations to yours, but one also mentioned that he’d been find an official source to give as a link verifying the accuracy.

Would appreciate any help you can give – especially if you can find it on the Vatican site.

Hi cassini,
I use as a reference the Catholic Encyclopedia, quoted here in part:

“As to the second trial in 1633, this was concerned not so much with the doctrine as with the person of Galileo, and his manifest breach of contract in not abstaining from the active propaganda of Copernican doctrines. The sentence, passed upon him in consequence, clearly implied a condemnation of Copernicanism, but it made no formal decree on the subject, and did not receive the pope’s signature.”

Willy, Read the above carefully. Now the heresy was defined and declared in 1616 and the Church of 1633 accepted it as immutable:
Code:
And observe in what emphatic and unmistakable terms Rome [of 1633] repudiated the notion that the decree might be interpreted as a practical direction, as a measure of caution for the time being, or as anything short of an absolute settlement of the question.
“Understanding,” the Congregation said, “that, through the publication of a work at Florence entitled *Dialogo di Galileo Galilei delle due massime Sisteme del Mundo Ptolemaico e Copernicano*, the false opinion of the motion of the earth and the stability of the sun was gaining ground, it had examined the book, and had found it to be a manifest infringement of the injunction laid on you, since you in the same book have defended an opinion already condemned, and declared to your face to be so, in that you have tried in the said book, by various devices, to persuade yourself that you leave the matter undetermined, and the opinion expressed as probable; the which, however, is a most grave error, since an opinion can in no manner be probable which has been declared, and defined to be, contrary to the divine Scripture.”
Now note how the encyclopaedia tries to fudge the truth by saying “but it made no formal decree on the subject,” This is but one of 100 ploys to get people to think the decree of 1616 was not formal. The record shows that the Church of Pope Urban VIII considered the heresy was immutable i.e., final. ie INFALLIBLE.

Nita, here is the most accurate account of the infallibility of the 1616 decree you will find anywhere. But remember Fr Roberts believed the sun is fixed, that is he too was a heretic. The thesis was trying to undermine the Church’s claim to infallibility. What he did not know was that the sun has never been proven to be fixed. In other words, whereas the 1616 decree was of the ordinary infallible magisterium, it was not proven wrong and thus the Church’s infallibility remains intact as Christ promised it would. Indeed Fr Roberts became a double heretic for rejecting Vatican I’s dogma on infallibility. Note now that souls were being lost through the ignorance of understanding the Galileo case properly.

Catholic teaching, yes. Now apply it to the Galileo case.

Where does one find in the deposit of faith that “the earth is the center of the world and does not move”?
The Authority of the Anti-Copernican Inquisition

In 1542, in the wake of the Protestant Reformation, Pope Paul III set up various congregations to assist the Pope in his task of safeguarding the Apostolic faith held ‘in agreement with Sacred Scripture and apostolic tradition.’ One of the most important of these was the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Inquisition, otherwise known as the Congregation of the Holy Office. The function of this body was specifically to combat heresy at the highest level. Then, in 1588, Pope Sixtus V (1585-90) gave this congregation even more explicit powers in the Bull Immensa Dei (God Who cannot be Encompassed). In this directive he made the reigning pope, whoever he may be, Prefect of the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Inquisition. This gave the Catholic world to understand that decisions assigned to its judgment, before publication, would invariably be examined and ratified by the Pope himself as supreme judge of the Holy See, and would go forward clothed with such papal authority.

The following, according to the Vatican minutes, was the order of events after the examination. On Wednesday, February 24th, the same propositions were qualified in virtue of the Pope’s order:

(1) “That the sun is in the centre of the world and altogether immovable by local movement, was unanimously declared to be “foolish, philosophically absurd, and formally heretical, inasmuch as it expressly contradicts the declarations of Holy Scripture in many passages, according to the proper meaning of the language used, and the sense in which they have been expounded and understood by the Fathers and theologians.”

(2) The second proposition, “That the earth is not the centre of the world, and moves as a whole, and also with a diurnal movement,” was unanimously declared “to deserve the same censure philosophically, and, theologically considered, to be at least erroneous in faith.”

Sometimes I come across an objection to Catholicism that seems to be a real problem - at first glance. As I study the issue, I realize there is nothing for me to be concerned about.

Randy, but you have something to worry about. If I had the time I could go through every one of these sites and point out the revision, obscurantism and denial of the affair. The idea was to get all Catholics to believe the 1616 decree was no more than the rantings of dopes who didn’t know the sun is fixed nor how to read the Bible properly. They malign and make fools of popes, saints and theologians like these here:

Cardinal Bellarmine:

Born in Montepulciano Italy, the now Saint Robert Bellarmine was made cardinal in 1599 by Pope Clement VIII who said that his equal in learning was not at that time to be found in the Church. By his books, published at the height of the Catholic Church’s reply to the Protestant Reformation, he dealt formidable blows to their heretical doctrines and ecclesiological ideas, especially those of the Freemason King James I of England, while by his catechism, translated into forty languages, he spread the knowledge of Christian doctrine in all countries of the world.

The special commission set up to investigate and examine Galileo was made up of three of the most eminent theologians of the time. The first was Pope Urban VIII’s personal theologian, Monsignor Agostino Oreggi, an ex-pupil of Cardinal Bellarmine’s and a consultant to the Inquisition or Holy Office. The second investigator was also chosen because he too was ‘a pope’s man’, Fr Zaccaria Pasqualigo, a brilliant professor of theology. The third commissioner chosen was a Jesuit, Fr Melchoir Inchofer S.J., Professor of Theology at the Spanish University at Messina who was not only a theologian but had a fair knowledge of astronomy and mathematics as a reading of the Dialogue demanded.

After Isaac Newton and the Freemasons of the Royal Society of London told the world Newton has shown the sun is fixed Churchmen panicked, lost faith in the divine protection of Church decrees and did a U-turn on the Church’s own doctrine.

Since then there has been the greatest whitewash in history trying to fool everyone into believing this U-turn was legal. It was not.

Had they had faith, they would have discovered no human can determine if the sun is fixed or not so the 1616 decree was never proven wrong.

You Randy, like millions of others, including me until I found out, were convinced by these fairy tales that the 1616 decree defining and declaring a fixed sun as formal heresy were not worth the paper they were written on so could be dismissed as the ramblings of men who did not know how to interpret the Scriptures and who needed a science lesson from Galileo.

The truth is that these Churchmen of 1616 and 1633 protected the Scriptures’ true literal interpretation and did so immutably. They were never proven wrong by the Masons or anyone else.

However, the application to a heretic is Exclusion from Fellowship or Excumunicated. If Galileo had not recanted his belief based on his observation surely this would have been the result.

Here are some specifics I’m thinking through:
after an injunction had been judicially intimated to me by this Holy Office, to the effect that I must altogether abandon the false opinion that the sun is the center of the world and immovable, and that the earth is not the center of the world, and moves, and that I must not hold, defend, or teach in any way whatsoever, verbally or in writing, the said false doctrine, and after it had been notified to me that the said doctrine was contrary to Holy Scripture
By his statement here specifically the Holy Office felt that indicating the Earth - was not the center of the world - was “contrary to Holy Scripture”. It must be held then that the Holy office felt proper exegete of Holy Scriptures would indicate that the earth is not moveable and all other heavenly bodies are. However, from Galileo’s observations it would very much seem so. Since he did not have the instruments to accurately judge the milky way. The earth in comparison to the sum must their for move and the sun immovable. These were just observations. Yet he had to recant calling his accurate observation with his limited knowledge a lie. Something about that strikes me Orwellian. That is a problem for me.

Also what’s up with this?
thereof I have with my own hand subscribed the present document of my abjuration, and recited it word for word at Rome, in the Convent of Minerva, this twenty-second day of June, 1633.
There’s a Convent *of * Minerva? A roman goddess? I admit ignorance of this but why wasn’t the name changed to reflect a saint as is the custom in Europe?
