Washington, DC – The Gallup polling firm released a new report today looking back at its abortion polling from 1975-2009. It found that, over the last several years, Republicans and Democrats have become more polarized as Republicans move to a pro-life direction and Democrat embrace abortion.

I just came to the US… I thought that pro-life was a Republican position.

The Republican Party has long been the more conservative of the two major US political parties, however, back in the 1970s it still had a strong moderate wing. In fact, at the 1976 national convention there were attempts to remove all mention of abortion from the party platform or to insert support for Medicaid funding of abortion in the case of rape, incest or threat to maternal health.

What the Gallup Poll results show is the rise of the Religious Right, which became a national phenomenon in 1980 and may have hit its high water mark in 2004. During the 1980s, a strong stance against abortion was seen by party leaders as necessary to keep Religious Right activists in the fold and moderates were increasingly marginalized.

one hopes Republican candidates and legislators will read and heed the results of the poll, because if the data is true for registered Republicans in general, it certainly has not borne fruit in actual performance of many legislators

American politics are settling into a European style left right split with the Dems now firmly in the Big government, hig tax high send position underwriting social and sexual incontinence and the Reps in the opposite corner.

America now has a Christian Democrat party called the GOP and a social democrat opposite called the Dems.
