I am not sure if this is even the correct place to start this post, but I have a question I’ve struggled with.

Why do people go to casionos to gamble? Aren’t the odds drastically in the favor of the house? I’m 29, and I have my own temptations and addictions, but I have never understood why people essentially throw their money away.

I am NOT judging them or saying that they are worse than people who struggle with other addictions. I understand why people get high (to feel good for the moment) or struggle with sexual addictions, but I do not understand why people gamble.

I work with a few people who love to gamble and who do it just for fun. They love throwing the dice, or playing black jack. They are completely aware of their odds and I’m sure they always come out behind. I personally think this is bizarre but I guess they consider it a form of entertainment.

But for a lot of others I’m sure they think they can win big. Or they have a strategy that will give them an edge.

For myself I really enjoy various card games but I couldn’t pay to do something I can do for free on the computer.

My wife is like that. She enjoys gambling and goes into a casino with a set budget and time limit. Whichever runs out first, time or money (usually money), she stops at that point and then it’s on to something else.

There’s probably no one reason why everyone who gambles does what they do. I know for some people, they consider it entertainment. One could easily spend a chunk of change going out and playing a round of golf (or mini-golf ) or going to a movie. In this sense, gambling is no different than any other activity in which one pays for an experience. It’s a thrill. For me personally, gambling makes feel like I’m flushing money down the toilet, but others probably feel the same way about buying video games. We’re not all entertained by the same things.

For others, gambling really is an addiction (as one poster indicated in another thread in response to this thread). I think it’s probably hard for anyone who does not suffer from an addiction to really understand what it’s like. We probably all have minor addictions and foibles, but not all of us have addictions with such harmful side-effects. Of course, it goes without saying that we want to reach out with love to those suffering from addictions.

I have never been to a casino but I wouldn’t mind doing so. I thought the odds were only slightly in favor of the house. Maybe there others like me who think that though the odds favor the house, it doesn’t exactly seem like throwing away one’s money. I thought the casino business depended in part on guys like me hearing friends talk about winning occasionally.

I do not believe that gambling is morally wrong. However, I do believe that people should gamble in moderation because gambling addiction is always a possibility and who wants to waste all their money on a game of chance anyway?
