Just wondering what the Church’s position on gambling is. Be it online or in casino’s. Any/all replies will be greatly appreciated.

The Church holds tha gambling in and of itself is not immoral. Otherwise we could not have bingo nights! 😃

The problem occurs with the compulsion to gamble, when rent goes unpaid, children go without food, etc. This condition is obviously reprehensable.

Every effort must be taken to correct this situation while maintaining respect for the individual who may be addicted to gambling.

And if gambling itself was immoral, then we could not have things like life or auto insurance.

Life insurance is you placing a bet every month that you will die in that month, and the insurance company betting you won’t.

It’s just as much gambling as slot machines.

Here is the CCC on the subject
2413 Games of chance (card games, etc.) or wagers are not in themselves contrary to justice. They become morally unacceptable when they deprive someone of what is necessary to provide for his needs and those of others. The passion for gambling risks becoming an enslavement. Unfair wagers and cheating at games constitute grave matter, unless the damage inflicted is so slight that the one who suffers it cannot reasonably consider it significant.

Its my understanding that EXCESSIVE gambling is a mortal sin against the 7th Commandment.
