Hello,

I recently found a Garabandal medal/relic in my deceased grandmother’s things. She was a lady of great faith. I read up on the relic and discovered that Our Lady supposedly promised that those who wear the medal will suffer Purgatory on earth instead of after death. I wore it for a period of time, but suffered from so much anxiety that I could hardly get out of bed and I therefore removed it. I told my friend what happened and she asked to borrow it. She still has it at the moment. She said that she has experienced crying spells when she wears it. I am hesitant to take it back because I am not sure if the Garabandal apparitions are approved, or if there is evil deception or if it is fake. Does anyone has any information or an opinion on the Garabandal apparitions?

Thanks in advance

Same answer as your other thread – Catholics are not obligated to believe even approved revelations, such as Lourdes and Fatima. And certainly not in unapproved ones.

The Garabandal Apparitions are NOT approved by the Church, and there are many, MANY signs that it is false. Have nothing to do with it.

There’s an older guy who believes in her visions - at my church.
He actually went there - a road trip - decades ago.
To hear him tell - of what he felt and saw - is fascinating.
He’s disappointed that the church doesn’t approve it -
But it certainly sparked his faith - and left a strong impression -
and at 82 years old - remembers things from her like yesterday.

The Garabandal apparitions have not been officially approved by the Church and therefore it is against the TOS for this forum to discuss them here.

Same as your Medjugorje thread. We do not discuss the content of unapproved apparitions.

If you would like to wear a medal in order to increase your devotion, I would recommend a Miraculous Medal. It is based on the 1830 apparition on the Rue de Bac to St. Catherine Laboure and has been approved by the Vatican for a very long time. Many Catholics including myself wear the Miraculous Medal which is Vatican approved, and/or the Brown Scapular which is promoted officially by the Carmelite order. Those are the ones I would recommend you wear. Perhaps your grandma had one of those in her things.

You can keep the Garabandal medal as a memento of your grandma. Perhaps one day the Vatican will approve Garabandal, but that day has not happened. Garabandal has also not been “approved for faith expression” which is a type of approval where people might be able to wear a medal without the Vatican officially approving an apparition. I myself would choose to not wear a medal at least until there is an approval for faith expression.

Sorry. Didn’t know it wasn’t aloud for discussion. I just joined a few days ago, and I’m not sure how to delete this thread. How do I do that?

You don’t need to delete it. You were only asking if it was approved or not, because you didn’t know. The answer is No, it is not approved.

I was just commenting so others would be aware of the TOS, including the people who have gone on to discuss the videos of the alleged apparition and all that stuff that we’re not supposed to talk about.

For any further questions on approval of apparitions:
I have found The Miracle Hunter website to be a pretty good resource for information on apparitions. It is not 100 percent complete - I was searching for info the other day on the Miraculous Crucifix of Limpias after finding a medal of it in my grandfather-in-law’s things, and couldn’t find that one on the Miracle Hunter site. But most of the time when I go to look up some alleged apparition, the site has it, along with discussion of whether it is approved, and whether the approval is by local bishop or Vatican, and also whether it might be just “approved for faith expression”.
