Garden Grottos Anyone?

I have heard that in parts of Louisiana, you are considered “whacky” if you don’t have a Mary statue in your front yard!!! 😃

Mine, the flowers around her are fake because I couldn’t wait for the planted ones to come up. We planted some more since I took that picture and it’s even more beautifull now.
 
I remembered the name of the company that has decent garden sculptures. Toscano. They have a Christian section.
 
What a great topic! I have been looking to buy a statue for the outside of our church (see funny comment below) where we have several vacant pedestal things along the rear wall where 30 inch statues look nice. Now I am going to be looking for one for my own garden, too! I’m going to look at the links provided for plants for a Mary garden. I have lots of space! Why haven’t I been thinking of this?

As a child I was enthralled by some very plain lifesize statues at the church in the parish next to ours (where we went occasionally).

This is so funny because our Deacon, who knows I am looking for a statue for outside the church, gave me a copy of the catalog from this company. It was verrrry strange the way they juxtaposed the religious statues with the downright pagan ones. I am not condemning them, I just thought it was rather humorous.

(I have a line on a local source for statues that I am going to visit personally.)

There’s a lot of faith-themed sculpture besides the classical up-ended blue bathtub with a statue of Our Lady in it. I was just browsing the Toscano catalog and found a lot of good angels. St. Francis seems to be popular, even with heathens. Angels are in style across the culture as well.
 
My wife & I have a Mary grotto in the SE corner of our back yard. Often during a warm summer evening, we will sit on the swing on the patio, enjoying the Gulf breeze and say the rosary with either one or two candles burning in the grotto.

Hey! How stupid am I? I never thought of putting candles in there. What a lovely idea. Our statue is about 4 feet high, so a couple of those tall sticks with candle mounts might be nice. Thanks for the idea!

I found this on another forum awhile back … it’s a do-it-yourself Solar Votive Light, which could be used in a grotto or outdoor garden instead of candles (no danger of fire, and no maintenance needed):

Being an avid gardener and a landscaper, I have a grotto of the BVM in my yard. (Don’t know how to post photos here…)
It is backed by climbing roses and fronted by daylilies and all sorts of blooming plants, ala the cottage garden “look”.

A few years ago I entered it on a garden tour, the donations from which went to various non-sectarian charities, and some Christian ones. There were no “rules” for participating in the tour, and anyone could be on it.

I had NO negative reactions to the grotto whatsoever by anyone who came to view the garden. It wasn’t an “issue” one way or another, but many people said they appreciated it.
