Well, I have never been one to garden. Frankly, I just really haven’t had the time. But this year things have calmed down somewhat, my baby is bigger so after a quick pep talk, I decided to give it a go, and start by doing some weeding …

I LOVE IT!! It felt wonderful, digging in the earth. It was so peaceful and relaxing. And when I looked back at how nice it looked, it was a great feeling. BUT, my nails are yuck(the gloves broke), my jeans are all muddy and my sneakers are a mess.

Just wondering what your gardening uniform looks like. Do you keep a certain outfit set aside? Does anything go, so long it’s comfortable and breathable? What about those really hot days, and how about socks? Yes, I need a book called Gardening for Dummies. My neighbor was nice enough to let me know, that the thing I had been waving around calling a thing is called a trowell. Who knew?🤷
 
It depends on the weather and whether the mosquitos are bad. The only thing that I think is essential under all conditions is a pair of shoes with good soles.
 
If the weather is nice, I wear shorts and I love to garden barefoot. I do prefer gloves though, the cotton ones with the rubbery nodules which are great for pulling weeds.
 
I have to wear long pants. Shorts make me a target for chiggers, mosquitoes and other insects. I also have allergic reactions to some plants (like green bean plants), skin only, so I wear jeans, a long sleeved shirt. Always closed shoes, no sandals. I do not want the dirt on my feet! 🙂

Oh, and gloves, of course. I need to get a new pair.
 
I usually wear shorts, flip flops (or go barefoot), and a tshirt or tank top. I rarely wear gloves. I like getting dirty! 😃
 
I turn into a total dirtball. Here in SC, it’s always either the mosquitoes or the sun, so I wear old, patched jeans, a long-sleeve, white hiking hoodie (white gets dirty, but it reflects the heat!), and either crocs or hiking boots, depending on the season.

I also wore through gloves once a week until I bought a good suede-tipped pair. I’ve also found that when my nails get dirty, I can wash my hands while the sink is filling, dunk my hands for a while, get the dirt our from under my nails, and rub everything else off. Ends up with totally clean hands!! It’s the soaking that does it.
 
So basically ANYTHING GOES!! Shoes, barefoot, short sleeve, long sleeve, short pants, long pants … Alrighty then, looks liek I can just wear what I want as long as I don’t mind getting them dirty.😉

About the gloves. Any good recommendations? I wore through mine in an hour.
 
Bare foot and leather gloves…invest in a good, great pair of leather gloves it is essential to have a quality pair if you are going to wear them. I only wear shoes when I wear my boots to shovel, I love to feel the earth under my feet and between my toes…I am frequently tempted to run through a farmers field barefoot as the earth begins to wake up and they begin plowing before they plant! yummy.

what covers or doesn’t cover the rest of me depends on the weather!

oh…I cant wait for dirty toes!

Well, if you want to go there, there are also folks who enjoy gardening in the nude. I have no opinion on this because I’ve never tried it, but I have been informed that it does save on laundry. I would advise insect repellent, sunscreen and a tall fence.
 
I learned a great trick from my MIL. I don’t like gloves except when I have to get those nasty weeds that have prickles on them. 😉

Before I go outside I just scrape my fingernails full of bar soap. I fill them up with soap and by the time I’m done weeding I still have enough soap in them that when I wash my hands it just comes out and i’m not stuck with dirt in all the crevices. It’s awesome!

That would definitely save on laundry, but I think I would scare the neighbors. Plus, when I bend over, they might think night has come from an early appearance of the moon.🙂

The ones I had were not leather. I guess I need to go somewhere better than the dollar store.😊

I wonder what the farmers would think about the crazy lady running barefoot through the fields yelling, “I LOVE my dirty toes!!” LOL Well, at least you don’t garden naked.🙂
 
I bought a Gardening for Dummies book! :o

I’ve never gardened but this is the year I’m planting a bunch of creeping flox on the slope of our ditch. In a couple years, it will look pretty nice to have a blanket of flox up there! We’re going to try a vegetable garden too!

I’m glad I saw this, I never even thought about what I would wear.

I’m so jealous! You’re out in your garden already! and we’re getting 7 inches of snow tonight!

My garden is irrigated with river water and is a mosquito’s dream! I wear jeans and boots and unless it’s TOO hot, long sleeves. nothing special, just my usual work clothes. I never bother with gloves. lots of the highest DEET bugspray I can find though! 😃 …course I am not very refined either. I’m your average farm girl.

lately I’ve been “gardening” in my jammies though. I have started all my seeds in my cozy bathroom and transplanted them once already, and now I can do everything from the comfort of my living room… for now, lol 👍

I see you’re in MD, so I would HIGHLY recommend socks and long pants even if it’s hot. go out closer to sundown if it’s too hot, the water stays better then anyways. I lived there a few years and the ticks were terrible, I knew several people who ended up with lymes! so check CLOSE after you come it, those little buggers are TEENY TINY!
 
OK maybe I can wait for dirty toes…my kids read the calander and it says “spring is here”…6" of snow last says “nope, not yet”! But they all want to be barefoot, now tow of my girls have cut open their feet! SIGH, “Put your shoes on!”

No, the farmer won’t find me naked in his field, just naked feet!

But, ohhh I love the smell of good soil!

I love the soap under the nails idea, I hope I remember it when the snow is gone and I really can play in the dirt! Even in gloves, the dirt gets in, just not as bad.

Of course you can wear whatever you like! And as you get more practice, you’ll find what works best for you.

Generally, I wear old long pants (jeans or sweats) and a long-sleeved white shirt. My skin is really sensitive, so I need to stay covered up. I either wear gloves or don’t, depending on the type of work I’m doing.

And to keep my hands clean, I use bath oil on my hands an hour or so before I go outside. This seals the skin so that it’s harder for the dirt and plants to “stain” my skin. Well, here in the Rocky Mountain state, it’s extremely dry, but this probably won’t be a problem for you 😃

I usually just wear whatever I have on, often my pjs. But then again, my garden is a collection of pots, so that cuts down on the dirtiness. 😃
 
I like to wear long jeans, socks, boots or at least closed toe shoes, a light-weight long sleeved top, and a fishing hat. And always gloves. Cotton for weeds, leather for roses. I’m the most unlikely gardener I can think of. I don’t want to touch anything and I don’t want anything out there to touch me. But I like the result of gardening, so I do it. One time last summer when I gardened in shorts I ended up with a bite from something on calf. It puffed up really big, lasted over a month, and left me with stretch marks on my calf. I don’t know what it was but…hmmm maybe I’ll start tucking my jeans into my socks? Well maybe not lol I don’t want to look THAT silly.

I use good leather gardening gloves made for women’s hands. It makes all the difference in the world. You don’t have to pay a fortune for them, just make sure they are all leather. They breathe well, and you can use them for light or heavy work. I don’t like the cotton ones because they wear out to fast. And I have washed my leather gloves in the washer, just let them sit out to dry. They are a bit stiff when they dry, but they soften up the first time you wear them again.
