Whenever I watch the Disney cartoon movie The Hunchback of Notre Dame with my daughters, I always end up thinking what the significance to Catholics having gargoyles on our cathedrals would be?

I did a search on the internet and even found the following link to the Protestant Episcopal Cathedral in Washington that apparently has some interesting gargoyles

Gargoyles originally served a utilitarian function: they drained off water that would otherwise damage the building. The word comes from the Latin gurgulio and the Old French gargouille and means “throat.” It also is reminiscent of the gurgling sound water would make in the pipes. Once lead pipes were invented, gargoyles’ purpose was primarily decorative.
