For those who are familiar with Gary Michuta, who is the Catholic author of books like “Why Catholic Bibles Are Bigger” & “The Case for the Deuterocanon,” which attempt to defend to Catholic OT canon, and who has been a guest on Catholic Answers Live numerous times, he is planning on having TWO back-to-back debates on the OT canon on YouTube on Reason & Theology (a Catholic apologetics ministry). For anyone who is interested, the links are posted below to each debate. And if you have a YouTube account, you can login & post questions, which may be answered at the end of each debate. Here is the info & link to the first debate on Tuesday, July 7th at 7pm EST:

And here is the link to the second debate on Wednesday, July 8th at 8pm EST:

Thanks for posting.

I think very highly of Gary Michuta.

So do I. Watched him in other debates and as a guest on Catholic Answers. Are you planning on watching the debates?

I may watch them on a computer (my android device wouldn’t cut it). I have to see how things proceed for me healthwise. Long story and I don’t want to make this thread about me.

Praying for your health. According to Reason and Theology, although it will be live, it will also be archived on their YouTube channel. So whatever you miss for either debate, you can watch later.

Does anyone know who Steve Christie is? This is his debate opponent and I’m going to have to Google him to find out what his views are. I was just wondering if anyone has seen him debate before and how good he is. Thanks !

Ummm, I assume Steve Christie is not the former football player! My google fu failed me! 😂😂😂

Does anyone know who Steve Christie is?
He is a former Catholic. And he compares himself to St. Paul in the sense that as St. Paul stated that he was a Pharisee of Pharisees
(Acts 23:6 - I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees)
Christie calls himself a Catholic of Catholics.

He says he was a Catholic until he got saved.

'Being that good, I guess he could debate both sides of the issue and G. Michuta could just sit down and watch."

I have G. Michuta book on Bible .
He is very good. and a wise debater.

I am hoping to watch.
John

I’ll try to catch it on YouTube after it’s posted. I’m interested in what they will debate. I can’t watch YouTube on my iPad…too many issues so it will be when I’m at my laptop. It seems the debate will just be on the canon…that should be interesting…I’m on the catholic side of this issue! Not that that matters…

Well everyone, tonight is the first debate. Depending on where you live, it will start at 7 PM Eastern standard time, 6 PM central 5 PM mountain and 4 PM Pacific. I believe it’s the same times tomorrow night on Wednesday when they debate the Deuterocanon. I think I posted the wrong time for tomorrow night. It should be 7 PM Eastern standard time, not 8 PM. Unfortunately I cannot change it in the OP.
Looking forward to it!

Tonight is “Part 2” (and the final part) of the debate. You can watch it here at 7pm EST (4pm PST). And if you have a YouTube account, you can login & post questions in the live chat, which both debaters will attempt to answer towards the end:

Did anyone get the chance to tune into either or both parts of the debate on Tuesday and Wednesday? Curious everyone’s thoughts.

How about you @JohnR77, did you get a chance to watch it?

How about you @Cathoholic? Did you either part? Praying for healing for you.

I did and as before it was very civil but im not sure i would call this a real debate. Im not sure i would call myself a real debate critic either. 🤫 but it sure seemed like there was just a lot of prepared reading coming from Christie, even in his rebuttals, that were the same information over and over again without addressing Michuta’s points. I kept feeling like Christi was just trying to read as much of his book on screen as he could and not listen to what Michuta was saying. However, I did see some debate and rebuttal in the Q&A sections.

Just my 2 cent.

Peace!!!

Not yet…is it posted on YouTube yet? I have to watch on a computer so if it’s posted, I can watch later today.

Did you? I’d like your thoughts if you did!

After watching both debates a couple of times, Gary was actually reading off of what appears to be one or two screens. When his mic was not muted the one time, you can hear him typing. He was probably pulling up prewritten documents on his screen(s), and you can actually see his eyes moving back and forth while he is speaking. But Gary reading isn’t as obvious as Christie, since the latter appeared to have a lot more material he presented, as he went to the time limits a number of times. He also spoke a lot faster, apparently because of this, which explains why he spoke so rapidly. He probably knew he had a lot more information to present, so he needed to make sure he got it under the time limits.

Also, Christie did address a number of Gary’s points at the beginning of his rebuttals, before getting into his own comments. One thing to consider, because of the time constraints, the debaters cannot realistically address every point their opponent brings up. For instance, there were several of Christie’s challenges that Gary never really addressed, like the issue of the Targums or why the Catholic Church today doesn’t know whether the books Trent passed over in silence are inspired or not, since Jesus and the first century Church did. I think Christie’s arguments about the second century church depending on the ever-growing Septuagint, and other reasons he brought up, present a good argument how that knowledge of these boundaries got “lost” after the first century, and why you find inconsistent lists, even in the West as well as the fourth century councils, including Hippo and Carthage.

Also, in the live chat area, Dave Armstrong, who is no friend of Christie’s, pointed out there is nothing wrong with a debater reading prewritten material during a debate. Both Luther and Eck read prewritten material during their Dispensation at Leipzig in 1519, as did Gary during their debate.

BTW, I think it was cool that William (the moderator) brought up it was the 501st anniversary - to the day - of Luther’s/Eck’s Disputation that Gary’s/Christie’s debate was taking place. And I thought both of them did a good job presenting their arguments. Nice way to remember the Disputation anniversary with another debate on the OT canon.

Yes, both debates are archived on the Reason and Theology YouTube channel. Just click the links above in my OP, and you should be able to go right to them.

Take a look at some of my comments in my reply to @adf417 regarding my thoughts. Both debaters presented some compelling arguments for their side. Their approaches were just different.

And I am pretty sure “that” Steve Christie is not the same as the former football player. LOL! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
