So? We should have great joy in this decision. We can not let the perfect be the enemy of the possible.Melinda Gates has been a big supporter of artificial contraception.

AFAIK, the official teaching of the Roman Catholic Church is that the use of artificial contraception in marriage is a mortal sin which can send someone to hell. Is it correct to call someone a Roman Catholic if he publicly disagrees with a major teaching of the Roman Catholic Church? Would it be more correct to say that the person is a dissenting Catholic or something similar?
But the topic of the thread is the foundation has quit funding abortions. If you want to start a thread abut her supports of contraception ill be glad to join in. The problem that I see here is that some contraceptives are abortifacient. And why is it not more correct to call someone a dissident or dissenting Catholic if they disagree with a major teaching of the Roman Catholic Church?But the topic of the thread is the foundation has quit funding abortions. And , yes, it is correct to call someone a Roman Catholic even if they disagree with a major teaching of the Church. The Church is a hospital for sinners-not a hotel for saints
Especially if they do so publicly and openly, as Melinda Gates has done. But that aside, take a look at this article about eradicating malaria - an effort in which Bill Gates is involved. Things such as this would ensure quality of life and economic development for people in hardship areas of the world without breaking moral laws and possibly do so with no major controversy at all.The problem that I see here is that some contraceptives are abortifacient. So they used to fund all sorts of abortions and now possibly only some. It is still a good thing. why are people determined to not see that? this is good news but people are determined to insist it is not. I don’t understand.Especially if they do so publicly and openly, as Melinda Gates has done. My thoughts exactly. Perfect should not be the enemy of good. Also, abortion really is evil. I personally don’t believe contraception is as bad. I am aware that this is not what the CC officially says, but I am allowed to have my own opinion.So they used to fund all sorts of abortions and now possibly only some. I don’t think that is something they support.Erm, what about abortifacient “contraceptives”?
The activities of the foundation in health are, according to the foundations site, in the areas of
Their other work specific to the continent of Africa is in agriculture, financial services for the poor, and(what seems to be the central theme of this thread)family planning. In public interviews last year(which is about the same time that the articles listed by the OP were posted) .
- Vaccination Delivery
- Tuberculosis
- Polio
- Pneumonia
- Neglected Infectious Diseases
- Malaria
- HIV
- Enteric and Diarrheal Diseases

According to the foundation up to a quarter of the girls that attend school drop out due to pregnancy. If this is true than preventing pregnancies in young girls may have some impact on education levels achieved.
I don’t think they ever did. For example, back in 1999…But the topic of the thread is the foundation has quit funding abortions. If you want to start a thread abut her supports of contraception ill be glad to join in. But I am very,very pleased they are not going to be funding abortions.
Those early experiences clearly have helped shape Melinda’s and the foundation’s giving. For example, while the foundation donates to a few family planning groups, including Planned Parenthood Federation of America Inc., those initiatives are a small part of the foundation’s overall donations. Furthermore, the funds are earmarked for very specific purposes, such as a teenage hot line and Web site, projects that have nothing to do with providing abortions. Source.
It is “better” to have 25 murders in a city than 50 in a year, but would it not be better to have 0 murders?So they used to fund all sorts of abortions and now possibly only some. In the eyes of the secular world, yes. In the eyes of the Church, are you obedient to the teaching even if you struggle with it? Even by posting the above view, are you not subtly encouraging others to adopt that view? I ask this so you may be prompted to examine your own conscience and be the best you can be, not to judge you or make you feel bad.My thoughts exactly. Perfect should not be the enemy of good. **Sin is a personal act. Moreover, we have a responsibility for the sins committed by others when we cooperate in them:
- by participating directly and voluntarily in them;
- by ordering, advising, praising, or approving them;
- by not disclosing or not hindering them when we have an obligation to do so;
As for whether or not the Gates’ project’s “family planning” component provides abortifacient contraceptives, we don’t have enough information to know for sure unless we had an insider’s viewpoint, or they were willing to openly disclose about what they do, what if any subcontracting groups they work with to accomplish their ends, etc.
- by protecting evil-doers. – Catechism of the Catholic Church, No. 1868**
I do understand what you’re saying. I guess for me it’s kind of . . . bittersweet, perhaps? I find it hard to only celebrate, it still tugs at me how much farther there is to go. Maybe just a difference in your personality/outlook and mine.I believe you are missing the point. Of course its best to have 0 abortions. that dont diminish the fact that this is still a reason to thank God? Surely if people reduce abortions its not the work of the devil but of God. Lets recognize that and celebrate it instead of insisting on the eradication of all evil before any victories are celebrated. All evil will be conquered on judgment day. Not today or any day before. The defeat of evil is gradual process from one victory to another from cross to new heaven and new earth. When we have a small victory lets celebrate it and give thanks. I think You missed the point by focusing on criticizing Melinda gates as a person instead of the long term battle against the evil. Even for Melinda gates as person, this is victory. It shows theres something in her that has awoken to the evil of abortion. Celebrate and keep praying for her total liberation. For most people salvation and conversion is long discovery process not instant like Paul.
Accord to M. Gates girls that have children to soon are not able to complete their education and this can impact many other areas of their lives and impacts the level of self sufficiency they achieve. Her stated goal isn’t to reduce their numbers and birth control isn’t the only area in which she puts efforts.Regarding Melinda Gates - I just have seen too much about how wealthy privileged people are deceived into thinking they’re helping the poor, minorities, and people in less-developed nations by reducing their numbers via birth control …]
No, I don’t use hormonal contraception. However, I do have my critical thinking skills. I don’t just blindly follow along just because… After all, some of the people who originally made these rules about contraception are the same people who took part in awful abuse. I am not saying all priests did, but too many did, and on a global scale. My point being, I don’t see them as the ultimate authority on this. The thing also is that many Catholics and even some priests feel the same. All my Catholic friends use contraception. Should I assume they are going to hell in the same way that someone like Ancel Keyes likely did?In the eyes of the secular world, yes. Colbert Report:I guess it’s a small win, but they still support contraceptives. I don’t know how Melinda can call herself Catholic and support that.
Colbert:
Melinda Gates:Here’s one of the problems with your initiative. You and I are both Catholic. How can you put your soul in mortal parol by going against the church?
One of the things to understand is how much we in the Catholic church have alike. The social justice mission of the Catholic Church is really incredible, they way they serve the poor around the world. And so I think what the Catholic Church wants space to do is make sure that women know about lots of methods. The rhythm method is they one that they actually preach in many places around the world. That’s okay that’s one method. I think we should let women choose that or choose a modern method. As long as we do both I think we can continue to work together
It was early church fathers who taught against contraception a very long time ago amost two thousand years big saints holy martyrs and holy men of God. Are you accusing them of abusing children? The church has only refused to change the teaching from them. It has not created the teaching from blue sky in 20th century. It come from apostles through the earlyvfathers down down to thsvday, So bringing abuse scandal here is really bad taste and unfair. Some catholic priests abused boys and 98% of catholic priests did not. This means the church cannot say right is right and wrong is wrong? This means church cannot say God forbids murder and adultery just because some 2% of priests are sinkers of pedophilia? You think very well of your real reasons for rejecting teaching on contraception. Talking abuse scandal is poor poor poor reasoning completely. You also reject other moral teachings of the church because some bad priests abused children or is it only contraception you reject forvthst reason? I’m totally wounded by your comment and it is unfair from a catholic person to attack against the church. Totally unfair, I say. Everytime someone disagrees with the chuch, abuse abuse ause is what they say as if it is the excuse for everything. What about the charity charity charity? What about the saints? Disagree with the church all you will but ointing to this recent ugly scandal of the wrong of less than 3% of clergy to reject 2000 year old teachings is wrong reasons.No, I don’t use hormonal contraception. However, I do have my critical thinking skills. I don’t just blindly follow along just because… After all, some of the people who originally made these rules about contraception are the same people who took part in awful abuse. Anyway, I regret staring this thread. I thought we could rejoice about reducing abortions. But nope. It seems like the only joy would be if there were no contraception ever along with no abortions ever. Talk about throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
This forum is not actually good for my faith. I see ppl here admitting to being racists or ppl who are totally against government welfare for the poor. Yet these same people act all holier-than-thou and like they are the best Catholics ever just because they don’t use contraception. And the crazy thing is that if the CC issued a statement tomorrow saying that it thought contraception was fine, most ppl would just blindly follow it. That’s not how I work. Even if they stated that abortion was fine it would never change my mind.
