Hi,
I am in the process of gathering and organizing ideas for a story. The only real detail I know is going to be part of the story is that the main protagonist/hero will be a priest, possibly an exorcist. I have different ideas that I am trying to work out, but I know the main hero will be a priest. There is the possibility that this character will be fighting demons somehow. But please pray that I write whatever God wants me to write, and that I throw away any ideas that are not part of God’s plan for writing this story, possibly series of stories. Also, if you know of any novels, or stories that feature a priest as the main protagonist, so I can see what has been done already with this idea, please message me. But please pray that I think of whatever ideas God wants me to incorporate into this story. I have a lot of ideas again, but the only real thing I know is going to be solid is that the main hero is a priest.
Thanks for any prayers for this intention.
God bless you.
Amen.

If he’s an exorcist, there is plenty of inspiration out there for you - watch the well-known movie The Exorcist and the less known but brilliant The Rite. There are a lot of stories about exorcism out there so you will need to think about what yours is going to say differently. I write stories from time to time and I’d be happy to help you work out ideas or proof read what you write.

Also praying…This one seemed appropriate (by Pope Leo XIII)

O Glorious Prince of the heavenly host, St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in the battle and in the terrible warfare that we are waging against the principalities and powers, against the rulers of this world of darkness, against the evil spirits. Come to the aid of man, whom Almighty God created immortal, made in His own image and likeness, and redeemed at a great price from the tyranny of Satan. Amen

I knew a missionary priest who spoke of natives who were literally walking inches off the ground under possession of demons. He was a very down to earth man who was not prone to the hyperbole. He said that the institution of the Eucharist in these villages destroyed the power of satan and these examples of real possession were severely curtailed. I have no reason to doubt his stories. This geography might be a good place for an exorcist. Mind altering drugs could be plentiful as well as cabalistic murders, secret societies. Just a thought.

I think a good place to start is to study real storied of exorcism. There are many documented cases, as well as many saints you can research to gather real information. If you’re going to use “the exorcist” movie as a reference point- research the real story behind the movie… because Hollywood tends to put their spin on these stories and they start to lose their authenticity. The true story happened to an young boy I believe. What you are choosing to write about is a serious subject, pray long and hard about what you write- and stay safe because I fear satan won’t like you putting together a book that could open people’s eyes. Consider reading “hostage to the devil” by Malachi Martin- it’s not fiction. He delves into 4 or 5 cases of actual possessions and exorcism cases. The book was a real eye opener for me… as much as I thought it would scare the pants off of me- it brought me to a deeper understanding of how and why it happens- by the time I finished it scared me less because i knew it can only happen if you let it. The Rite is a great movie- and exorcists have said that it’s the closest to what an exorcism would be in real life. The exorcism of Emily Rose is also a good movie- and based on a true story: Our Holy Mother appeared to her and offered to end her suffering if she chose it, but said that if she stayed behind and suffered longer that many people’s eyes would be opened to the truth. Her true story can also be found online- I believe her name was Analiese (or something like that).

Pray for HIS guidance. If he wants you to put a story out HE will help you write it. I’be always been fascinated by this topic, but as i’be grown older I realize that many put these stories out and step up the goriness in order to make it more poignant… which makes it less authentic. It’s a serious topic that deserves the truth… the people who have suffered deserve the topic to be approached in a way that is truthful… and realistic. In short- I guess what i’m saying is don’t go Hollywood in your book… Hollywood movies often portray demons as the ultimate winners in the end and that’s just not the case.

Although totally different, some of the most famous priest stories are the (51?) Father Brown mysteries by G.K. Chesterton. You’ll find that the emphasis is usually more on the action and the other characters, and that he’s quietly, unobtrusively on the sidelines to provide the necessary spark.

I used to prefer novels, but I’ve read so many that had so much pointless filler and poor pacing, I’ve really started appreciating the short story form a lot more than I once did. You might consider doing a series of stand-alone short stories, perhaps with a metaplot to bind them together into a cohesive, connected unit.

An outline would be invaluable, especially in the planning stages. I’ve often found that what I think I’m going to sit down and write, and what ends up coming out, are two totally different things. Getting all those changes and modifications knocked out in the brainstorming phase is much easier than cutting out a few thousand words of writing, when you realize that your story has changed directions on you.

I’ve also found that praying is very helpful, especially when things just aren’t coming together.

Good luck with your project.

You’re on the right track, as in the Catholic Church, only priests with specialized training can become involved in exorcisms.

As to fiction with priests as protagonists:

The novel Father Elijah (author escapes me).

The “Father Brown” series of mysteries (also a PBS series) by GK Chesterton.

There are others.

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

†

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

Praying for you to be guided by the Holy Spirit and write what He inspires you to…
