For what reason does the Church place Gaudete (Rejoice) Sunday on the third Sunday during Advent, instead of the last Sunday?

I think it’s more of a midway break, like a “seventh-inning stretch.” It was probably much more significant when Advent was a time of serious fast and abstinence. A bit of history at newadvent.org/cathen/06394b.htm .

I’ve never seen a picture of a pope wearing rose vestments.

Does anyone know of one?

Thank you for the link. It should answer the OP’s question. The site also has a good article about Laetare Sunday, or the 4th Sunday in Lent.
