Hello everyone. I have been struggling with the sin of masturbation for a while. At first I did not even know it was a sin, but once I found out it was hard to stop. However, I had decided that I was not going to do it anymore, but after a week, I gave in. You see, I have been through a ton of stress lately (I am OCD and have had so many worries lately it was crazy, and on top of it, my father is currently in the hospital with a broken femur), and that is a way of getting rid of stress. I think I was under the impression that it was only a sin if you had feelings of lust, which (even though it may sound strange) I do not feel when I’m “doing that.” I was unsure about it, but at the time I was so drawn to do it that I didn’t really care. However, afterwards I felt HORRIBLE and am starting to obsess really badly about it. There is confession at a church in our area tomorrow, but I have an appointment for a massage (and not for pleasure, either. It helps me physically, as I have a herniated disc in my neck) and I do not think I will be able to make it in time. I would have gone this week, but I am a college student and have classes all day.
My OCD, like I said before, has been kicking up terribly lately and has gotten me so worried about various issues before that sometimes it makes me feel like I’m going to throw up. I want to be able to receive Communion this Sunday…may I if I say an Act of Contrition? I hate to miss it. Please help and pray for me. Have I committed a mortal sin?
When I’m stressed out, it’s almost as if I do not care for a moment…I thought it would make me feel better, but it made me feel worse. 😦

Sorry that you hurt your neck.

Try to get to confession, enev another parish if possible— if not don’t receive Sunday until you do get to confession.

It is grave matter…I don’t know if you are or are not in mortal sin…when in doubt refrain until you can ask a priest

If you gave into masturbation you have committed a grave sin.

The good news is that you can call your parish and tell the pastor that you would like to be in a state of grace for your Sunday Obligation and to receive eucharist. He will more than likely be able to set up a time before the mass to see you for a confession. I haven’t known priests to turn people away from “emergency” confessions.

Ite in pace,
Joshua C.

Many of us have been down this road. For what it’s worth, there’s no easy way out of avoiding such temptations. Only not giving in works. Good luck with your struggle, will pray for you.

Prayers for your continued success. Reconciliation with Jesus through His priest will bring you one day closer to breaking this type of compulsive habit.

Only your/a priest can determine whether you have committed a mortal or venial sin with regard to masturbation.

It is a grave sin. But if it is habit, your responsibility may be less – talk with your priest.

As our priest told me: “You’re not going to shock me. I’ve heard it all before.”

And if I were you, I wouldn’t mention the OCD, etc. Be contrite and honest.

And as a nice lady told me: “Tell the priest the truth, not your excuse.”

👍

Ugh, this sounds like me a year or two ago… First off I think the best thing is just to take a step back and recollect one’s self. Then to decide whether or not you’ve committed a mortal sin. Mortal sin requires the fulfillment of 3 criteria: Grave matter, sufficient reflection, and full consent of the will. If even just one of these criteria are missing it is not a mortal sin. Also if you are in doubt as to whether or not it is a mortal sin it is appropriately considered a “doubtful sin”. When you have a doubtful sin on your soul it is not necessary to go to confession before receiving Communion, but it is greatly advised.

If you’re having trouble discerning what is or isn’t mortal sin do some research [in reliable sources] or talk with your priest on the matter. Biggest thing to keep in mind is perseverance. I came very close to losing my faith when I underwent a similar trial to this, but getting back in focus no matter how many times my faith, attention, or motivation strayed was what eventually got me through. For many people, including myself, it’s just trying over and over. Eventually, provided we persevere, we’ll be able to do so much less frequently, and trying will eventually get easier too. After awhile [depending on how well you persevere, but this took me like 2 or 3 years in all] it will be as simple as saying “no” to impurity and moving on.

As an afterthought, don’t expect that you will or will not beat the habit in 2 or 3 years - every person is different and it may take much less or maybe much more time to beat it. The main thing is just sticking with your goal. I’ll keep you in prayers. 👍

If you don’t go to confession, I suspect you will keep obsessing about your sin and worry yourself with it a lot. Try to get on line and find another parish that offers another confession time. Call your parish and see if there is time for a private appointment for confession. Call another parish and see if their priest can see you.

But, what is really more important - the massage or the condition of your soul? Maybe someone will want to change appointment times - call your massage therapist and check. Or maybe you can reschedule it for a few days from now.

We have to get our priorities in life straight. Jesus made US his priority, I’m sure he’d rather have done anything else rather than end up on that cross. Every time I think about committing serious sin, I just remember that cross…

Seek out other parishes. Some have Saturday early confession; not all Churches have confession just before Saturday Vigil.

The other thing is that, and sorry about the herniated disc, but the stress you feel may also exacerbate the pain of that disc so you have to weigh the pain of the disc against the pain of feeling in mortal sin and being denied the sacrament. See if you can move the massage appointment instead, if no confessions are available.

"In order for a sin to be mortal, it must meet three conditions:

Mortal sin is a sin of grave matter
Mortal sin is committed with full knowledge of the sinner
Mortal sin is committed with deliberate consent of the sinner

This means that mortal sins cannot be done “accidentally.” A person who commits a mortal sin is one who knows that their sin is wrong, but still deliberately commits the sin anyway. This means that mortal sins are “premeditated” by the sinner and thus are truly a rejection of God’s law and love."

Your reasoning is for the priest to assess. It’s a grave matter and any culpability can only be determined by a priest. You really need to get to confession and not receive the Eucharist until you have. Masturbation is intrinsically sinful. The Magisterium does not separate out motive from the deliberateness of the act. Speak to a priest.

Mortal Sin

Going to confession can’t hurt. I know it is very difficult as I have been trying to quit since I found out it was a sin about a month ago. It can be harder for some than others this has to do with the fact that it addicting believe it or not. So depending on how long and how often you had been doing you may experience some withdrawal symptoms. So I pray for you keep fighting the urges, going to confession, and try saying hail Marys and the rosary.
God Bless :signofcross:

My advice: try to find the earliest confession possible and feasible, even on a remote parish of your town, and just unburden that weight.

It is not to us to judge whether your sin was mortal or venial, neither should you lose much time on those kinds of judgements. For a matter of prudence, act like it was mortal (try to make a perfect act of contrition) and go to confession ASAP. If you can’t confess before the Sunday Mass, just make a SPIRITUAL communion (that is, receive SPIRITUALLY the Lord). There are many wonderful prayers written by SAINTS to that purpose.

A favourite:

My Jesus, I believe that Thou art truly present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love Thee above all things, and I desire to possess Thee within my soul. Since I am unable now to receive Thee sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace Thee as being already there, and unite myself wholly to Thee; never permit me to be separated from Thee.

St. Alphonsus Liguori

I have and always be struggling with this. You NEED to call a priest and set up a confession asap for your own good. yes i know it’s weird going to a priest that you may not know but with millions of men struggling with this and i bet many priest who have struggled with it in the past they will be able to give you sound advice. But i would suggest you find someone you know a very close christian friend or a priest that you can go to regularly for every day advice. I will tell you this, this will be a sin that will haunt you for years if not your life and it only gets worse the longer it goes on. remember that Christ doesn’t love you because you are “good enough” But he loves you no matter what and is waiting for you to say that you are broken and that he is the only thing that can truly fix you.

Hi I had recently been on this site and looking up the topic of masturbation. I had kept telling my self I wouldn’t do it but I gave in. I am a young teenager and I had herd that some catholic priests do not consider this a mortal sin for teens due to hormones and such. I really want to receive communion this Sunday but im not sure if I hav committed a mortal sin or not. Would an act of contrition do the trick because I don’t think I would be able to go to confession later on this week.

Call the nearest parish and ask to schedule a confession for tomorrow or the next day, that way you can receive Communion on Sunday but you do have to go to confession. I will be praying for you, God bless you!
