Gay ‘Marriage’ Bill Fast-Track “Deplorable” Says Canadian Bishops Conference President

Ottawa, June 8, 2005, (LifeSiteNews.com) The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) organization issued a letter yesterday to Prime Minister Paul Martin requesting an explanation for the Liberal government’s rush to pass Bill C-38 which would change the definition of marriage in Canada.

The letter points out that Canadians are deeply divided on Bill C-38 and this is not the moment to rush into legislation a Bill that has such “enormous social and legal consequences.” The CCCB urges “continued reflection, research, study and discussion” for the sake of society and for children.

The CCCB reiterated its persistent concern about the impact of Bill C-38 because the legislation would alter the significance of marriage as well as endanger basic “freedoms of conscience and religion, as well as to freedom of expression.”

Concerning the government’s haste the communiqué concludes by stating “the Roman and Eastern Catholic Bishops of Canada, as the spiritual leaders of 13 million Catholics in this country, deplore this move.”
