this does not bode well
Kids are too young to be taught about homosexuality. Especially by TV. I can tolerate gay characters in adult-oriented programs, but this is crossing the line. What’s next, gay Muppets?

I figured this article would mention The Legend of Korra. As a fan of this show, I was very disappointed by its ending. Of course, the creators’ decision to end on that note was highly applauded by many fans and the secular media. Apparently, they are even going to be making comics which will further explore the romantic relationship between these two female characters. It’s too bad that this “subversive” ending overshadowed the rest of the good that was in the show, with its themes of forgiveness and vivid depiction of PTSD.

Just a couple of things to nitpick about the article, though. *The Legend of Korra *ran for four seasons, not three, and I wouldn’t classify it as a children’s show. Of course it did run on Nickelodeon, but it was aimed more at teens than children.

Overall though, I agree with the article. It highlights a troubling trend where TV shows, including children’s shows it seems, are applauded for their “bravery” in portraying an LGBT relationship as a normal and positive thing.
 
There are other ways to contract AIDS without being gay, so I’m not sure Kami counts.
 
OP, thank you for the heads up!! Didn’t think I’d have to worry about homosexual messages in childrens’ cartoons.
 
Despite the years of jokes, etc. I’m surprised the way this country is going that these two loveable fellas remained just roommates. [oversize image of Bert and Ernie removed]

To me, the ending of LoK seemed like concession do the sick fans, fantasizing about Korra and Asami for a long time. And afterall they didn’t portray them kissing or smth

Old good times when close male friendship was not seen as implying anything sexual.
 
For all of those who have responded to my original post about Kami, I understand A) That Kami is not homosexual, and B) Kami is not a male. It was a response to the OP’s final comment about “What’s next, a gay muppet?”

I mentioned Kami as an example of how adult themes (such as STDs) have already been introduced into muppet shows for sometime in other countries, thus implying that the likelihood of a gay muppet is not nearly as remote as it used to be. Whether this is just about showing all viewpoints or starting kids early with indoctrination is something I have no comment on, but the fact remains that more and more issues are being presented to kids at much earlier ages than previously before, particularly sexual issues.

Why do you think this is a new thing?
I was in grade school in the 70s. Here is a video we were shown.

Sexual identities has been a focus of brainwashing kids for a long long time…

It’s not surprising.

Most shows on Cartoon Network haven’t been kid friendly for while, particularly the ones at night. They’re filled with adult innuendos aimed at teens, and young children watch it too.

Nickelodean was okay, until Spongebob started becoming popular [there were a lot of sublte jokes such as Spongebob and Patrick being a couple to care for a baby clam]. Aside from Avatar: The Last Airbender, the shows after the early 2000s haven’t been great. Cartoons [and even live-actions] these days mainly go for the laughs; the most common humor used is the sort found in Spongebob with a hint of Happy Tree Friends. There’s a superficial plot in each episode that’s used to set up jokes more than anything.

I never thought of Bert and Ernie as gay, but it wouldn’t surprise me if someone eventually decided they were. Just like in LoK, I never thought of Korra and Asami as having any romantic feelings for each other, but viewers see what they want to see. The end of season 3 was a sign that the creators were giving in to what people wanted to happen.

Nowadays, people find it hard to imagine that two members of the same sex can be that close without having some sort of romantic relationship. I’m glad a lot of media from Asia is still able to show brotherly and sisterly love without people feeling like they must be gay… Though I’m sure there will always be someone who “ships” them in fan fiction.

I saw a bit of Steven Universe, and I thought that it might be having a lesbian/ bi relationship with the character’s dad liking the same alien woman as her confidante likes her.
As well as a two characters that form a third character

Elmo at least used to be played by a gay male.
