Protestantism has branched out in so many ways, from a rebellion of the corrupt and wealth by the Catholic Church (Lutheran…it was how they saw it, which is why many hard-line Lutheran churches are bare) to needing a quickly divorce (Church of England).

So are you supporting gay marriage or blaming Christians for them? Because from where I am standing, it can be difficult to see it!

I blame “Christians” for accepting gay marriage, homosexuals have been around for a long time but until the last 50 years majority of Christians did not accept gay marriage. Protestants broke from the Catholic Church during the reformation and up until the 1930s remained fairly close to the Church on much of its doctrine. Today even many Catholics stray from Catholic doctrine, the biggest enemy of the Church is some of our own people who don’t believe what the Church teaches yet still remain in the pews in hopes of changing doctrine. A perfect example is the so-called Catholic Nancy Pelosi who consistently votes against teachings of the Church and tries to even influence the clergy in her district to preach her beliefs.

We need to understand that there are many godly Protestant clergy and laity that are on the same side as many godly Roman Catholics when it comes to the moral issues of our day. Perhaps Roman Catholics and Protestants who really are serious about defending traditional marriage should work together instead of attacking each other. There is plenty of blame on both sides.

Case in point: Henry VIII’s first wife, Catherine of Aragon, was only his wife by way of a dispensation (as the “widow” of his elder brother). The issue arose when Henry wanted the pope to dispense with the dispensation. Your argument has very little, if any, merit.

I have been thinking very much along the same lines. Speaking on purely natural terms, sex is the way in which new life is created. Through marriage, the church and govt recognizes that the two separate individuals are united in the growth and development of the individuals who are produced through their love. They are united no only in devotion to each other, but also to devotion to their children. So what happens when sex is no longer connected to children (through artificial means)? Marriage then, is only about the two, children are optional. Love does not produce life. Thus, marriage is reduced to a contract, not a covenant - reflected in the prenuptial agreement mentality.

Along with this is also lack acknowledgment of the equal but different aspects of men and women / fathers and mothers. With the “right” of marriage comes the “right” of children - forget the natural right of a child to have a mother and father. It is this same push by feminists which is embraced by churches which accept female ordination.

Essentially, churches that accept easy divorce (contract vs covenant understanding), contraception (unnatural means to remove the relationship between sex and life), and that do not recognize the different meaning/purpose of the male and female gender (female ordination) all contribute to the environment which sees no problem with a “marriage” contract between two people who’s relationship is not life producing.

Luther would turn over in his grave and give anyone in range an earful over the notion of same-sex “marriage”.

Some ELCA Lutherans seem to accept the concept of homosexual relationships as OK, clergy included as long as it’s “committed relationship”, but stopping just short of OKing homosexual marriage. Wanna bet that that’s next on their agenda?

Not to mention all the other Protestants in various denominations who join dissident Catholics in supporting the whole sordid mess.

There’s plenty of blame to go around, but it isn’t just a Protestant problem. Homosexuality has tainted the Roman church just as profoundly as any Protestant sect. I find it quite hypocritical to paint Protestants with such a broad brush. I know of more Catholics who contracept than I do Protestants. I also know of more Catholics who have had abortions than anyone else I have ever known. I also know of more active homosexuals who are Catholic than anyone else. King Henry VIII didn’t kill more people than the Spanish Inquisition did. We are all sinners in need of God’s grace. Trying to shift the burden doesn’t help anyone.
